| Lafayette and St. Amant win their second team championships in four days at the Spartan Classic |
| December 4th, 2025| Written by: Staff writer |
Things got a little closer but both the Lady Lions of Lafayette and the Gators of St. Amant defended their team championships from the Griffin Open at the Spartan Classic on Wednesday, November 26th, at the Lamar-Dixon EXPO Center in Gonzales. East Ascension teams placed second in each of the Spartan Classic's gender divisions, by 25 points in the Girls Division and five in the Boys Division.
The author had not seen the two gymnasiums that were built at the Lamar-Dixon EXPO Center. Now it is the premiere site to hold large southeast Louisiana tournaments. Once again East Ascension holds the toughest November tournament, albeit only one of the powerhouse Catholic teams, Holy Cross, was entered.

At the Girls Griffin Open East Ascension (71.5 points) placed third behind Lafayette (128 points) and Prairieville (76 points). It should be noted that Lafayette had nine point-scoring wrestlers at the Griffin Open while East Ascension only had four. At the Spartan Classic five Lady Spartans were point-scorers, whereas Lafayette had 11.
By no means are these factors to take anything away from the Lady Lions' victories. You can only wrestle against those who show up. Props have to be given to the East Ascension girls, of course, but it is tough to win events with entries in only half of the available weight classes.

Lafayette had only one champion in Quetzicalli Guevera-Tapia at 126 lbs., one runner-up in Haylee Johnson at 100 lbs. and two third-place finishers in Elliana Schreiber at 120 lbs. and Shyla LeBrun at 138 lbs. It should be noted that the 2025 state runner-up Ryleigh Blanchard did not compete. Blanchard was 10-0 after the Griffin Open. However, more noteworthy is that the Lady Lions recorded 30 pins, far higher than their closest competitors, Baton Rouge, East Ascension and Chalmette, each of who scored only 17 falls.
Only Walker had multiple champions. Willow Dixon improved to 14-1 at 100 lbs. and MacKenzie Thomas, who is 4-0 at 120 lbs. after going 5-2 at 132 lbs. and 3-1 at 126 lbs.
Repeating their championships at the Griffin Open were Mikayla Byington of St. Amant at 107 lbs., Lilly Johnson at 114 lbs., Guevera-Tapia at 126 lbs., Laken Griffin of Live Oak at 132 lbs., Isabella Guillory of East Ascension at 138 lbs. and Savannah Camarata of Albany at 145 lbs.

Boys Summary
St. Amant won their second tournament in four days, only this time they did
not enjoy a 29-point cushion like the did at the Griffin Open. East
Ascension nipped at their heels all day long, coming five points short when all
was said and done. The Gators and the Spartans each had two champions and
two runners-up. Thomas Abington at 157 lbs. and Joshua Caronna at 175 lbs.
were the Gator champions while Alex Amedee and Braylon Stewart won for the
Spartans. East Ascension had one third-place winner, but the Gators had
two fourth-place finishers, which certainly helped their cause. Acadiana
also had multiple winners in Ozias Gray at 144 lbs. and Landon Olds at 190 lbs.

Carencro's Cody Hypolite
was voted the Boys Division Outstanding Wrestler. Hypolite had to win a pigtail match just to get into the 16-man bracket. He did that via a 19-3 technical fall. He would win his next match by a 20-8 major decision, a fall in 0:59, a 14-10 semifinals decision and a 15-12 finals decision. Hypolyte's record improved to 12-2 in winning his second tournament of the season (Brusly 8ish). |
