Eight Louisiana state champions travelled to Coralville, Iowa to compete in the USAW High School National Recruiting Showcase held on March 25th and 26th.  Five came back as All-Americans. Due to the numerous postponements, changes and cancellations to the traditional high school season caused by the pandemic, USA Wrestling has developed a new series of competitions to give high school boys and girls from across the nation a chance to showcase their talents on a national level.

USA Wrestling described the circumstances leading up to the event as follows:

"Due to the numerous postponements, changes and cancellations to the traditional high school season caused by the pandemic, USA Wrestling has developed a new series of competitions to give high school boys and girls from across the nation a chance to showcase their talents on a national level.

The pinnacle of the series is the new USA Wrestling High School National Recruiting Showcase, which will be held the weekend of March 26-28. This event will be absolutely loaded with talent."

The Louisiana wrestlers present at the event were sophomore Landon Reaux of Southside, sophomore Ethan Boudreaux of Teurlings Catholic, juniors Evan Frost and Jacob Frost, and seniors Charles Sauerwin, III and Jake Romig of Holy Cross, Rummel senior Jacob Ramirez and senior Brad Mahoney of East Ascension.  The young men were accompanied by coaches Ryak Finch and KeVondre Powell.

The event appears to have been seeded, but due to the large number of competitors from different states, the quality of the seeding could not be expected to be very accurate.

After a first-round bye Holy Cross junior Evan Frost, seeded seventh at 120 lbs., dominated his opposition.  He won his round-two match 9-1 MD.  He scored a 15-0 TF in the third round and won his quarterfinals match 12-2 MD over  the #1 seed.  In the semifinals Frost won a 15-6 MD over the #5 seed and in the finals he defeated Markel Baker of Illinois by another major decision, 17-4.  On his way to the finals Baker scored 19 points to his opponents' eight.  In the top-half of the bracket Frost scored 51 points while his opponents only scored nine points against him.  Add the finals match and Frost outscored his competition 68-13.

Jacob Frost was seeded first at 126 lbs. and looked to follow his brother's example, winning his first three matches by a 7-2 decision, a 15-0 technical fall and an 18-3 technical fall.  His quarterfinals match was a tough one, though, but Frost prevailed 4-2 SV.  He ran into a roadblock in the semifinals, though, losing via a 10-1 MD.  His consolation semifinals match was a tough 3-2 win, and he fell again in the consolation finals 7-3 to place fourth.  That is fourth in a 42-person weight class, which is outstanding at any level.

At 113 lbs. Ethan Boudreaux placed seventh, as did Jacob Ramirez at 145 lbs.  Landon Reaux placed eighth at 106 lbs.

* No guarantee on the Frost brothers' names.  They easily could have exchanged awards to confuse the writer.  Twins do that stuff.
