The seeding committee remembered that while he was only 2-0 so far in 2020-21, Dennis Daugherty of Jesuit had a good sophomore season against some tough competition in the 2019-20 season. His record was 7-6 but included wins over Darien Batiste of Zachary, Bailee Creasey of Byrd, and Daijon Bibbs of Chalmette, while his losses included the likes of South Beauregard's Chase Spooner, Live Oak's Austin Cook and Bibbs. Holy Cross' Cole Baiamonte might have received the top honors, but that may be something to see at State. Hahnville's Jacoby Celestine was 7-0 and was seeded second, but had only defeated two Division I opponents that had yet to earn the stature they seek. Ian Lyons of St. Paul's was seeded third with a 3-0 record, followed by Rayne's Tre`Von Williams at 11-1. The loss, albeit to a very good Division III wrestler, was enough to relegate him to the fourth spot.
None of that really matters as Daugherty was the only seeded wrestler to take the seeding process seriously. After a bye he scored falls in 5:06 and 2:24 before a 7-4 semifinals win over #5 Garine Gibson of Chalmette. It was supposed to be Williams in the semifinals after he defeated Gibson in the quarterfinals. But Williams lost to Southside's Ethan Gustafson, and that is who Gibson beat in the quarters. The bottom half of the bracket also went haywire early. After byes apiece, unseeded Kris Mesloh of Parkway defeated Celestine in 3:07, and then he lost to #7 Joel Lanclos of Teurlings Catholic. Lyons was doing his part until the semis, in which Lanclos pinned him in 5:14.
Division I: Now 7-0 with a Louisiana Classic title Daugherty should be the top seed at State. Despite a 1-0 record, Baiamonte should be seeded in the #2 spot as his win was over a Brother Martin opponent and he did place fifth in 2020. Lyons should be the third seed, particularly as he rebounded from his loss to Lanclos to place third over Williams. In the fourth-spot Gibson looks good, followed by Sulphur's Brett Laidlaw, who was one win away from placing.
Division II: While Lanclos placed better in this event, Williams has a win over him and should be the #1 seed at state. Lanclos should be second, followed by Quinn Collins (3-0) of Carencro.
Division III: None of the top Division III 220 lbs. wrestlers, that we yet know of, competed in this event.
