Weight Class Synopsis
Nobody really wants to be in this weight class either. When the season
ended prematurely Brad Mahoney of East Ascension had a record of 44-0. Seeded second was Hannan's Mark
Pennison with a record of 5-0, followed by Jesuit's Parker Anderson at 11-3.
Seeded fourth was Kade Moran of Baton Rouge. Moran was 8-3, with a loss to
Mahoney and two to St. Amant's Fred Garrison, Jr., albeit Moran won their third
match. Anderson's losses were to Blain Cascio of St. Paul, and
out-of-state wrestler, and Division III's Jason Krail of De la Salle.
Moran could easily have been seeded third.
Mahoney cruised to the finals via pins in 1:45, 0:34, 2:30 and 3:31.
Pennison's path started easy with pins in 0:52 and 0:53 followed by a 16-1
technical fall. Against sixth-seeded Andrew Gonzales of North Desoto, who
upset Anderson 8-6 in the quarterfinals, things got tough. Tied 4-4 after
two periods, Gonzales chose to ride Pennison and start a Sudden Victory period
as he scored the last takedown. But it was Pennison who scored the winning
takedown a little after 10 second had elapsed.
State Implications
Division I: It will be Mahoney, followed by Moran and at third should be
Brother Martin's Luke Ohler, who placed fifth. The fourth seed could very
well be Comeaux's Morgan Burke, who placed sixth. Logan Pertuis and
Anderson should get the #5 and #6 spots..
Division II: A fourth-place finish should be enough for Gonzales to be the
top seed in Division II, followed by Zack Watkins of Teurlings Catholic and
Zalen Wilson of Shaw.
Division III: Calvary Baptist's Christian Otzenberger was three points away
from placing in the event and he knocked Anderson and Lakeshore's Hezekiah
Chatelain out of the event. This should place him in the third spot at
State behind Pennison and John Reina of St. Louis. Reina has a win over
Burke, and it was Burke who knocked Otzenberger out of the event in a 9-7 match.
