Casual start to 2020-21 as Brusly, Grace King and John Ehret head to Rummel
November 10, 2020 | Written by: Staff Writer

It is early November.  Most kids do not know the weights in which they will compete come January and February.  Some are in better shape that others, but conditioning is what October and November are for.  Cutting weight is not "normal" yet.  Newer kids are participating in their first matches while more experienced ones are looking for that added maturity to show in their leadership and mat skills.

With these things in some of their minds, wrestlers from Brusly, Grace King and John Ehret converged on the Southeast Regional Olympic Training Facility at Rummel for their first matches of the 2020-21 LHSAA wrestling season on November 7th.  Only 18 full matches were contested they were not counted as scores for a dual meet, yet they do count as varsity matches.

NOTE:    The editor is not thrilled over the photographs taken by the rod-cone-challenged staff photographer at the event.  But this was not a fair test.  The matches were held on the northernmost mat of the SROTC.  This was done to allow wrestlers to use the small seating area or warm-up on the other mats, while parents were able to watch from outside the building through an opened garage-type door.  Hence the wrestlers were half lit by sunlight from the south while they were lit by fluorescent lighting from the north.  The difference between sunlight and indoor lighting is extreme, and nobody makes lenses which account a mixture of light like that.  A true indoor event is needed to see if the rod-cone-challenged photographer can still take a decent photograph.

This was the match of the day, for the first two minutes at least.  Two-time defending Division II state champion Andrew Trahan of Brusly matched-up again Rummel's defending Division II state champion Jacob Ramirez.  The first minute belonged to Trahan as he was able to take down Ramirez to his back for a quick 4-0 lead.  But with about 30 second remaining Ramirez started answering back, and Trahan simply was not yet in shape enough to withstand the Raider's onslaught.  Ramirez owned the last two periods and walked away with a 16-8 major decision.  If the conditioning aspect evens-out, this could be a very fun match to watch again later in the season.
