Curry, Burgess and Ramirez are Raider high points in a brutal 69-11Crusader win
(and Morgan Chabert turns eight on Monday)

The Brother Martin Crusaders travelled to Rummel High School on Wednesday night, November 11th, for their first dual meet of the new season. Several Rummel wrestlers had matches last Saturday, but that was not in a dual meet format. Tonight was, and the Crusaders showed no signs of ceding anything to Division I favorite St. Paul until the "all is said and done" part concludes after the state championships in February.

Despite Rummel victories by Division II runner-up Carter Burgess and Division II state champion Jacob Ramirez, and a one-point loss by Cole Curry in a great match, the Crusaders put on a pinning clinic. Crusader falls were recorded by Will Stumbo, Mason Elsensohn, Chase Scott, Quinn Williams, Evan Hope, Rocco Horvath, Luke Ohler and John DiMaggio. Crusader sophomore Matthew Meyer eked out a tough 7-6 win over Raider junior Cole Curry at 120 lbs., tenaciously hanging-on to long double-leg shots much like 2016 Holy Cross state champion Cole Clement did. Brother Martin also received three forfeits to reach the 69 points.

After the Meyer-Curry match was another stellar meeting. Anyone who may have considered Rummel junior Carter Burgess' runner-up finish in the 2020 state championships a fluke, as he was only seeded fifth, best take notice. Brother Martin sophomore Ty Duncan was extremely fast and opportunistic yet still found himself down 10-3 in the second period. He gained a few points toward the end of the second period but come the third period Burgess proved too strong in walking-over a deep double-chicken-wing which resulted in the Raiders' only fall of the evening. Two matches later senior Jacob Ramirez came about two seconds short of a first period technical fall over Crusader sophomore Sam Riles, who did well not to get pinned by the best 138-pound wrestler of the 2019-20 season. Ramirez ended the match quickly in the second period by garnering a 16-point lead, 20-4, to score the other five points for Rummel.

It is early November, of course, so any pundit's remarks about this match pale in importance when measured against the fact that Miss Morgan Leigh Chabert, a 2018 state champion for Rich Clementi's Gladiator Academy, and the sister of Crusader freshman Hunter Chabert, will turn eight years old on Monday. Miss Chabert is a very big Crusaders fan, despite that her brother is ineligible this season. Hunter and parents Abby and Eric are also in the photos.
