Shaw, Teurlings Catholic and North Desoto

Shaw, Teurlings Catholic and North Desoto should place in the top three spots.  While at first glance North Desoto seems to have a very big edge, one must know that their two returning state champions, Isaac Dees and Dylan Olivier, averaged only 26.5 points each, whereas Shaw's Glenn Price scored 30 points in his championship run. The Griffins' two runners-up averaged 21 points each while Shaw's two runners-up averaged 22.5 points.  Teurlings Catholic is barely ahead of North Desoto due to the fact that the one returning wrestler for the Rebels scored three points, which makes the non-placer average three points.  Of the three returning Griffins, one scored three points while the other two scored none, making the average for non-placing Griffins one point.  Determining a winner in Division II however, while the numbers look better for Shaw, will, as usual, be decided by whichever team scores the most bonus points.

1.    Shaw

Junior Glenn Price will be seeking his third Division II state championship, and he may give Coach Brandon Surrency the opportunity to place him in one of two or three weight classes, wherever Price may do the most good for the Eagles.  Shaw will also have runners-up senior Ashton Surrency and junior Todd Ritter wanting to win that last match which they got a taste of in 2020.  Senior Michael Seal, junior Jude Monaco and sophomore Hayden Tassin very well may find themselves in the last match of the tournament in their weight classes.

2.    Teurlings Catholic

The defending champion Rebels return Ivan Hale and Kade Chisholm, who both placed second to wrestlers who graduated.  Sophomore Ethan Boudreaux will certainly look to make the finals again.  Juniors Ashton Sonnier and Coen Begnaud, and seniors Jaxson Trosclair and Logan Smith will look to place higher than fifth this year.  As for some of the middle-heavier wrestlers, they may not have much experience, but they were the ones practicing against 2020 state champions Charles Travasos, Vaughn Romero and David Bertrand, so do not expect the Rebels to be very vulnerable in those weight classes.

3.    North Desoto

On math-challenged paper the Griffins look to be the team to beat again.  They return state champions in Isaac Dees and Dylan Olivier.  They have returning runners-up Hunter Hanson and Andrew Gonzales and third-place winners, twins Lance and Logan Ferguson and Jon'tavius Thomas.  Ky'dre Clark and Hunter Addison, who also placed for North Desoto, should be returning.

4.    Carencro

The Bears have returning state champions Tyrick Clay and Latrell Williams coming back.  (Williams placed second in 2020 but placed first as a sophomore in 2019.)  Junior Kade Bourque placed third behind a graduated Joshua Sarpy and was seeded two spots over but never met Rummel's Carter Burgess last year.  Placers Todd Arceneaux, Quinn Collins and Trenton Jolivette will also return.

5.    Belle Chasse

Belle Chasse is the only Division II top-seven team not to have a returning state champion or runner-up, but they know how to score points.  Coach Michael Cronin knew it anyway, but having spent years at Brother Martin no doubt solidified his view of the importance of bonus points.  They should be led by seniors Nicholas McClendon and Ty Martinez, who both placed third in 2020.  They will also return fourth-placers Jon Gagnon and Gavin Gautreaux, fifth-placer Gabe Meija and sixth-placer Leo Savoie.  Expect a good showing from Dylan Gaubert as well for the Cardinals.

6.    Rummel

Jacob Ramirez is a defending Division II state champion (and Louisiana Classic and Ken Cole champion) whom Coach Rod Cusachs may consider placing in a couple of weight classes come the state championships.  The Raiders have others who can help them shred these predictions: Carter Burgess, Mark Donegan, Austin Shook. Kobe Wise, Garrett Hudgins and Jacob Baltz, to name a few.

7.    Rayne

Defending state champion Ryder Hawkins will have runner-up Dayton Dugas, Blaze Cormier, Jakarion Fontenot and Tre'Von Williams returning.

8.    Haughton

Ten wrestlers are returning but only Louis Lindsey, Kameron Smith and Charlie Yocum placed for the Bucs, and all placed fifth.  The Bucs are young, though, and of the 10 returning for the 2020-21 season, eight should return for the following year.

9.    Lakeshore

The Titans will have nine wrestlers returning with experience from the 2020 state championships.  Junior Dominic Spizale placed fourth, but he was in the weight class with Shaw's Raheem Bonnet and Teurlings Catholic's Matthew Carrier.  Senior Hezekiah Chatelain placed fifth.

10.    Pearl River

Of the seven Rebels returning from last year's state tournament team, six are juniors or younger, so this is definitely a rebuilding year for Pearl River.  Dax Boteler (24-18) and Riley Holbrook (19-21) had good seasons last year.  Boteler was seeded 8th and finished tied for seventh.
