It was a busy early November around the state and we got a taste of some matches to keep an eye on this season.

Swamp Owl 8ish

Terrebonne High School hosted the Kenner Discovery Swamp Owl 8ish on Saturday, November 8th.  I went to this one and was very impressed with the new talent on the mats.  After the 2023-24 season, in which I went to three events, and the 2024-25 season in which I did not make any, I did not know anybody save a few coaches and officials.  Prairieville, Vandebilt Catholic, Houma Christian, H.L. Bourgeois - I had not seen any of those teams before.  I was surprised as I had built teams pages for them on the Archives website, but, well, that's encephalopathy for you.  But I wrote an article and published some photos for that event.  I think the article and most of the photos psuqued, but I have been out of practice for about 18 months.  The kids deserve better, and with a little practice, meaning myself, hopefully they will get it.

Dale Ketelsen Memorial

The Dale Ketelsen Memorial held at St. Paul was a dual meet tournament with a lot of very good teams.  The host Wolves ended up winning the event with a 41-23 victory over Teurlings Catholic.  Jesuit placed third via a 44-35 win over Brother Martin.

It is still football season so forfeits played a big role.  Six of the matches in the finals were forfeits or double forfeits  Of the eight matches wrestled, each school won four and each totaled 17 points.  St. Paul received four forfeits (24 points), the Rebels received one (six points), and one match was a double-forfeit (zero points for both teams).  Thus St. Paul won the match 41-23.

Rumble on the River

Rayne High School dominated the Pearl River Rumble on the River, held at Pearl River High School on Saturday, November 8th, by winning both the Girls and Boys tournaments.

Albany's Savannah Camarata made some friends in central Louisiana when she won her last match, and the 152 lbs. weight class, over Piper Creith of Pearl River, denying the Lady Rebels any additional team points and preserving a 51.5 to 50 victory for the Rayne Girls over the Pearl River Girls.  Rayne and Pearl River each had two champions, as did Slidell, who placed a close third with 48.5 points.

Rayne's champions were Charleigh Hollier at 107 lbs. and Khalea Sinegal at 126 lbs.  For the Lady Rebels, Makayla White at 114 lbs. and Gabriella Walker at 185 lbs. were crowned champions.  Skyla Dominick at 100 lbs. and Kylee Mackles at 132 lbs. won for the Tigers of Slidell.  The other winners were Carsyn 'Gabb Booty of Central at at 120 lbs, Alivia Allen at 138 lbs. for Hannan, Camarata, and at 235 lbs., Khalasa Bosley of Plaquenine.

The Rayne boys had four champions and five runners-up in winning the Rumble on the River, The Wolves scored 211 points, 26.5 better than runner-up Slidell, which also had three champions.  Fontainebleau placed third, followed by Hannan and De la Salle.  Placing first for the Wolves were Gavin Schexnaidre at 106 lbs., Karsen Rozas at 126lbs., Kole Meche at 190 lbs. and Ayden Breaux at 215 lbs.  Slidell's winners were Zander Hollis at 120 lbs., Matthew Pierce at 157 lbs. and Jayvier Hollis at 285 lbs.  Other winners were De la Salle's Ben Schmidt at 113 lbs., Paul Schmidt at 132 lbs., Central's Landon Lipton at 138 lbs., Hannan's Ty Morales at 144 lbs., Connor Frasier at 165 lbs. and Noah Yonker at 175 lbs.  John Curtis' Abel Halsey won at 150 lbs.

The Outstanding Wrestlers at the event were Carsyn Booty for the Lady Wildcats of Cantral and Ben Schmidt of De la Salle.  Booty pinned her three opponents in 0:16, 1:16 and 0:19.  Schmidt won his matches in 0:21, via a 16-0 technical fall in5:07 and scored a 13-7 finals win over Jhase St. Amant of Slidell.

St. Michael Warrior Open

The Warrior Open produced several contests that might be repeated during the season.  St. Thomas More won the team championship with 168 points, which was 15 points higher than runner-up Jesuit and 26.5 points higher than third-place Brother Martin.

The Cougars of St. Thomas More had three champions in Foster Peterson at 138 lbs., Enzo Lopez at 157 lbs. and Jules Deshotels at 190 lbs.   Jesuit also had three champions in Michael Barnett at 126 lbs., Max Belsome at 132 lbs. and Connor Vargas at 285 lbs.  Holy Cross was the only other program with multiple champions.  They were Robert Morse at 150 lbs. and Rylee Reeves at 175 lbs.

The other winners were Zachary's Landon Blackwell at 106 lbs., NOMMA's Eden Nguyen @ 113 lbs., Southside's Zane Blanchard at 120 lbs., Ozias Gray of Acadiana at 144 lbs., East Ascension's Braylon Stewart at 165 lbs. and Dutchtown's Josiah Stewart at 215 lbs.

Gray in 2018 with Jordan Burroughs

The Outstanding Wrestler awards went to Acadiana's Ozias Gray in the lighter weight classes (144 lbs.) and Holy Cross' Robert Morse in the heavier weight classes (150 lbs.).  Gray, a defending Division I state champion, won his five matches via pins in 1:20 and 1:19, technical falls of 17-2 and 19-3, and a 10-2 major decision over defending Division II state champion Jonas Rebstock of St. Thomas More in the finals.

Morse, a senior, scored technical falls of 19-4, 22-6, 21-5 and 21-5 in the finals.  I am not sure how the seeding was done for this event, but it appears that it was by "common sense" based on how the wrestlers fared last season.  Morse was in what would have been the eighth-seed spot, but I doubt they went that deep.  Brother Martin's Josh Lara was injured in his first round match, which meant, after he defeated Lafayette's Finn Brotherton, Morse's second match was against an unseeded Jackson Ellis of Central.  He then topped fifth-seeded James Treadway of St. Thomas More before his finals match against unseeded Josiah Sejour of Live Oak.  According to Holy Cross coach Grant Hughes, Morse sat out last season after transferring from Jesuit, at which he posted a 10-6 record as a sophomore.

St. Thomas More 40-Brother Martin 36 - November 12th

I just remembered (Friday, 11:55 p.m.) seeing that in the dual meet between the Cougars and the Crusaders, St. Thomas More's Jonas Rebstock, a Division II state champion in 2025, defeated Brother Martin 2025 runner-up Quinn McDermott 4-2 SV.  That's a match between two of the best in the state that hopefully we will see again.  There were some Crusader wrestlers I do not yet see on their roster who did not compete, but I am sure there are some Cougars wrestlers I simply do not know who may be playing football still.  One cannot try to rank teams in November, anyway.
