A lion says "ROAR!"* |
* My son taught me that.
In a stellar freshman class at 106
lbs. it is hard to imagine that Shaw's Caden Judice only merits being the third
best. His one 7-3 loss to North Desoto's Jacob Kershaw in the Ken Cole
consolation finals did that. Worse than that might have been that he had
to face Alex Rozas of Teurlings Catholic five times this season. What did
a 14 or 15 year-old kid do to deserve that? Twenty-six seconds into his
Division III finals match seemed to make that unfairness disappear. It
also cost the young man a lot of finals photos, but he will get over that, in
time.
Judice did get a Warrior Open championship out of the season, and fared well
in the tournaments he did not win. He placed second at the Tiger
Invitational and the Jacob McMillan, and third at the Louisiana Classic.
At the Ken Cole he got both Rozas and Kershaw, yet still placed fourth. He
defeated Brother Martin's Anthony Oubre (D1 3rd), St. Amant's Johnny Laris (D1
6th), Lakeshore's Bryce Latino (D2 3rd), Holy Cross' Vincent Vidacovich (D1 4th)
and Michael Finders of Airline (D1 4th), so the season definitely had its perks
prior to winning a state championship.
Basile freshman Patrick Fontenot was seeded third and reached the finals via
an upset of Evangels second-seeded Parish Chambers. Fontenot won the Jimmy
Vidrine Division III tournament, placed second at the Acadiana Invitational and
fourth at the Rayne Invitational.
