Kristopher Mesloh of Parkway ended up being the right guy to receive the top
seed in this weight class. I am just not to sure of why he was granted
that spot. He and fourth-seeded Marques Hampton of North Desoto had met
twice and split their matches. But both of those matches were in
tournaments, and Hampton won the second one. The second seed was Brandon
Pierre from Lakeside. Pierre was 9-1 prior to the state championships, but
he really did not face top-quality opponents. Kendra James of Teurlings
Catholic faced harder competition during the season, and he did defeat
Hampton, so should have been seeded higher. Hampton should have been
seeded third, and James second. These are scenarios that need the coaches
in the seeding committee to consider other things rather than the LHSAA seeding
rules. That they did not is understandable. Perhaps it is unfair,
but by the time the 220 weight class comes around, the seeding committee can
become fatigued. I write this not as a criticism, but just as a fact.
James, seeded third and who knew nothing of wrestling until 2022, asserted
himself well. His nine losses included one to a Louisiana Classic
champion, two to a Division II state champion, two to a Division III state
champion, one to a two-time Division III state runner-up and two to a Rebels
starter who was injured before the state championship, giving James his chance.
Kendra kept the finals match close come the start of the third period It
was 5-4 at that point. But Mesloh proved to be too much for the Rebel
junior. The Panther won the third period 6-3 for an 11-7 win.
