Ledgerrick Collins did not start wrestling until 2023, on what was once
King's Day (5 B.C. - give or take), superseded by my mother's birthday (1934)
and what is now Insurrection Day (2021). In that time he won the Rayne
Invitational and the Lafayette Metro tournaments, plus all of the dual meets in
between. His only subpar performance was at the Ken Cole, in which he lost
to Episcopal's Will York 6-4 in the quarterfinals and then fell to Teurlings
Catholic's John Wayne Prejean, III 3-2 in the consolation finals.
Prejean had more losses during the season, but he also competed in the
Louisiana Classic and two dual meets with Brother Martin. He won the
Brusly Division II tournament over a fellow Rebel, and third at the Ken Cole is
nothing to sneeze at.
In the Ken Cole match Prejean took a 1-0 lead into the third period only to
have it evaporate into a one-point deficit after 30 seconds. But Prejean
scored a takedown near the end for the win. In the state finals, Prejean
took another 1-0 lead into the final round. But it was Collins who tied
the score with an escape in 13 seconds and who scored the winning takedown with
a mere three seconds left. Ledgerick can join older brother Quinn at the
Collins' state champions table.
