Through no fault of his, Teurlings Catholic senior Layne
Rivette just did not appear on the editor's RADAR prior to the state
championships. Granted, the editor, despite what the voices may tell him,
is not psychic. Rivette beat D1 6th-placer Ephraim Craddock of
St. Amant, defending D3 state champion Jayden Guillory of Basile, North Desoto's
Collin Bell (thrice), Parkway's Christopher Bacot (twice) and D1 fifth-placer
Colin Cusimano of St. Paul. His only losses were to D1 champion Wiley
Boudreaux of Southside, D1 sixth-placer Lucas Maneckshaw of East Ascension at
the Louisiana Classic (a Rockwall Heath, Texas kid also), and to Rummel's Dylan
Stubbs in the first round of the Ken Cole, in which Rivette was seeded second.
A few matches later he avenged his loss to Stubbs and placed third. The
losses prevented the editor from recognizing that Rivette handily won the Brusly
D2 Invitational, and that his only D2 loss was the initial match against Stubbs.

On the other side of the bracket was North Desoto's Collin Bell. The
junior started the season with a fifth-place finish at the Cinco Ranch Big 12
and a runner-up position at the Blanchard, OK tournament. Rivette, though,
was a thorn in Bell's side all season. Rivette knock him out of placing at
the LACL 7-4. He defeated Bell for third place at the Ken Cole 7-5.
Bell upset second-seeded Jake Brandstetter of Rummel in 2:50 to reach his third
match with Rivette.

Finals
(1) Layne Rivette of Teurlings Catholic
defeated (2) Collin Bell of North Desoto 8-7
|
| Rivette scored
two takedowns and allowed two Bell escapes to win the first
two-minutes 4-2. Bell tied the score with two nearfall
points in the second period, but allowed Rivette to take the
lead again with an escape with 47 seconds remaining. A
reversal in the third period gave Bell a one-point advantage.
Rivette tied the score with an escape and then scored a takedown
for a two-point lead with 16 seconds remaining. A stalling
point awarded to Bell as time ran out was not enough to tie the
match, and Rivette had his championship. |
