For months the editor heard scuttlebutt about three incoming freshmen who
were to make a mark on the 2022-23 season. Alex Rozas of Teurlings
Catholic, Caden Judice of Shaw and Anthony Oubre of Brother Martin. Word
from a different water cooler came south about a North Desoto kid named Jacob
Kershaw. As it turned out the top two were Rozas and Kershaw, who met in
the Division II finals. Judice gets the third spot as he had a 8-2 win
over Oubre to place third at the Louisiana Classic.
Rozas, however, was leaps and bound above the others. He had two falls
over Kershaw, five wins over Judice and three over Oubre. We was 55-0 on
the season and won the Tiger Invitational, the Gulf Coast Clash, the Riot on the
Red, the Jacob McMillan, the Texas Outlaw, the Brusly Division II Invitational,
the Louisiana Classic, the Ken Cole and the Lafayette Metro tournaments, prior
to winning the Division II state championship. At 55-0, he basically had
the best season of anyone in Louisiana. In those matches he scored 30
technical falls.
His finals opponent, freshman Jacob Kershaw of North Desoto, only lost to
Rozas re Louisiana wrestlers. He won the Cinco Ranch Big 12, defeating
Oubre 7-0 in the finals. He placed third at the Blanchard, OK tournament,
eighth at the Kansas City Stampede, second at the LACL, third at the Ken Cole
and won the North Louisiana Regionals. His only losses to
Louisiana wrestlers were the two falls by Rozas, in 1:15 at the LACL and 3:33 in
the Division II finals. Only Judice, in two of their five matches, made
Rozas go the full six minutes, in losses of 12-4 MD at the Tiger Open and 10-3
in the Ken Cole semifinals.
