Before the Division I state finals, defending state champion Spencer Lanosga
had wrestled three matches. two of them were against Brother Martin's
Ethan Simmons. in those matches he scored falls of 1:48 and 2:36 over
Simmons and 1:33 over Harry Spring of Rummel. In the state championships
none of Lanosga's matches lasted 60 seconds.
Sophomore Ethan Simmons of Brother Martin had an excellent season. He
won the Cinco Ranch Big 12, the Bulldog Brawl, the Saints Invitational II,
placed fourth at the Trey Culotta, fifth at the Louisiana Classic and seventh at
the Mid-Cals. His losses at the LACL were 3-1 to Division II state
champion Kole Hayes of Teurlings Catholic and 4-3 to David Russell of Catholic.
Prior to the LACL he lost to Russell 5-4 in a dual meet. Another shot at
Russell was denied Simmons when #7 William Perry of Lafayette defeated Russell
3-1 SV in the quarterfinals. Perry did not make the semifinals easy, and
Simmons prevailed 4-2.
Lanosga was the last person Catholic wanted to see. Of their six finals
matches they only won one, at 182 lbs., which put the Bears up by two points.
At the time Jesuit had only won one out of three finals matches, but nobody
expected Lanosga to be challenged. Just a win over Simmons would give the
Blue Jays the title by two points. The 0:41 fall, though, doubled that
margin to four.
