East Ascension's Jacob Schexnaydre lost his first match of the season, again,
to Catholic's Thomas Domangue. That was on November 2nd, 2022. But
he faired better than 364 days before, when he lost 17-4 MD. This time it
was only a 7-2 match. He did not lose again in November or December, and
succumbed to what I have already mentioned was just a bad Louisiana Classic for
everybody associated with East Ascension. There he fell to unseeded
Airline wrestler Danon Walker in the semifinals 9-7 SV. He lost in the
consolation semifinals to Baton Rouge's Adam Landry 4-3 and the placed fifth in
a 3-2 match. Before the LACL Schexnaydre won the Warrior Invitational, the
Tiger Open, the Spartan Invitational, the Zachary Big Horse and the District
5-5A Championships. After the LACL he won the Ken Cole and the Greater
Baton Rouge Championships. And the Division I championship, of course.
If he had been sick in early November and relapsed the weekend of the LACL, he
might have been undefeated and seeded first at the state championships. As
things were, though, due to his loss to Walker at the LACL, Schexnaydre was
seeded second.
The Spartan senior would not get a rematch against Walker though.
Fifth-seeded Samuel Torres, or "Samson," of Northshore made sure of that.
Torres defeated fourth-seeded Nicholas Migliacio of Catholic 3-0 and then pushed
Walker to the limit, winning their semifinals match 4-4 UTB. During the
season Torres won the Titan Invitational and the St. Tammany Parish
Championships, placed fourth at the LACL and sixth at the Trey Culotta.
The Northshore junior was not supposed to be in the state finals, but, well, the
Airline sophomore Walker was not supposed to win the LACL. (Things just
got worse for Walker after the grueling 4-4 UTB match - Dominic Logiudice of
Jesuit defeated him 3-2, and he had enough wrestling by that time, as Landry
pinned him in 0:36 in the match for fifth-place. He is a sophomore, so he
will come back.) Torres only lost two match during the season - an 8-6 SV
loss to Migliacio and a fall to Landry, both at the LACL. Had he been sick
during the LACL, he probably would have been seeded second.

Finals
(2) Jacob Schexnaydre of East Ascension
defeated (5) Samuel Torres of Northshore 9-4
|
| Schexnaydre opened a 4-2 lead with two
takedowns in the first period. He was awarded a penalty
point in the second period, but Torres did not score in that
round. Leading 5-2 entering the last two minutes, Torres
gave up four penalty points while only managing one reversal.
Schexnaydre had enough to win the match after the first four
minutes. Torres, though, will be back as a 2023-24 senior. |
