Jackson Calderaro had an outstanding season. The Blue Jay Junior lost a
match early, at 195 lbs., to East Ascension's Jacob Schexnaidre, and after that
lost a Gulf Coast Clash finals match to an Alabama 7A state champion.
After that Calderaro won the Border Wars and the Louisiana Classic. Three
of his matches, at the Gulf Coast Clash, a dual meet and the Louisiana Classic,
he faced defending Catholic state champion Thomas Domangue. All three were
wins via falls. The editor only saw the LACL match, and there it looked
like Calderaro was just able to either wiggle or finesse himself out of and
potential dangerous situations against Domangue.
Domangue had an excellent season as well, with his only losses coming from
Calderaro and the same Alabama 7A state champion. He won the Greater Baton
Rouge Championships over D2 state champion Anthony Denova of Brusly, He
placed second at the Hoover Invitational and third at the Gulf Coast Clash.
The state finals were a little reminiscent for Domangue. In the 2022
finals, as a third seed, he defeated top-seeded Winn McConnell of Jesuit, who
had defeated Domangue twice in the 2021-22 season. In the finals match,
the slippery Calderaro was unable to stop Domangue's offense. Domangue
scored five takedowns to Calderaro's five escapes, leading to a 10-5 Catholic
win. This match put Catholic ahead of Jesuit by two points.
Catholic, however, was out of finalists, where as Jesuit, they had a "big one"
left.

Championship Consolation Rounds
(5) Brandon Gainey (HC) defeated )3) Jackson Peak 5-2
to place 3rd
One has to give Mr. Gainey some credit. Gainey only wrestled six
times in the 2021-22 season and did not compete at the state
championships, In the 2020-21 he did not compete at all. In
2019-20 he placed fourth. In this season he wrestled all of six
matches again, and two of those were losses to Calderaro. Yet he
still prevailed in the consolation rounds to place third. |
