Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Alabama - defending Division I state champion
Landry Barker did not care. He went through all of his opponents with
relative ease en route to a perfect 40-0 record. Only two wrestlers lost
by only five points, one of which was Teurlings Catholic's freshman Braedon
Simoneaux. Barker won the South Walton Border Wars, the Gulf Coast
Scuffle, the Louisiana Classic and the St. Tammany Parish Championships prior to
his 12-2 MD finals win over East Ascension's Gabriel Bonin. His favorite
match, however, may have been the LACL finals against Rockwall Heath's Leif
Clinton. Clinton defeated Barker 12-7 in the quarterfinals of that event.
That did not sit well with the Wolves' senior, and he avenged that loss with a
finals win via a fall in 2:34.
Second-seeded Gabriel Bonin was the second East Ascension wrestler Barker
faced in the Division I state finals (he defeated Santo Ramos 9-7 in 2022).
In his 65 matches he won the Tiger Open, the Griffin Open District 5A
Championships and the Louisiana Public Schools Championships. He was the
runner-up at the Warrior, the Zachary Big Horse, the Battle of New Orleans, the
Ken Cole and the Greater Baton Rouge Championships. He placed a
disappointing fifth at the LACL, but that was just a bad event for the Spartans
in general. At the state championships he pinned three of his four
pre-finals opponents in the first period, but he was tested in a 4-2 SV win over
Jesuit's Patrick Matthews in the quarterfinals. Against Barker, though,
the undefeated defending champion held Bonin to only two escape points. He
avenged a loss to Catholic's Sam Boulet, won a seven match series 4-3 with
Dutchtown's William Mathis, got the last of three matches with Covington's
Landen Carroll and had losses to the DIvision II finalists and the Division III
champion. Overall, that a good 65-match season.
