This was a very well-seeded weight class, despite that only one wrestler placed where he was seeded.  Yet it was indicative of the parity that exists at 285 lbs. when Jesuit's Spencer Lanosga is not involved.  TC's Kole Hayes was seeded first, as he had a 10-0 record that included a win over Shaw's Raymond Howard, who was not there but probably would have been seeded second or third.  Hayes also had a win over Brother Martin's Ethan Simmons, seeded third.  Second-seeded, David Russell of Catholic had one loss, to Baton Rouge's Eli Latitois (also not present), and a win over Simmons and #4 Joel Marchand of Hannan.  Simmons had a win over Marchand.  Fifth-seeded Ryan Fobbs of Erath had only a 3-1 loss to Kaplan's Ethan Vigneaux, but avenged that loss in the Public-Schools Wrestling Championships.  But Marchand had a 3-2 UTB win and no losses against Vigneaux, so he got the #4 spot.  Eighth-seed Nathaniel Theiss of St. Paul had losses to Russell, #6 Gabriel Millbern of Walker and to Marchand.  He proved troublesome enough in his first two matches but was not expected to get any further than the quarterfinals, where he met Hayes.  The St. Paul senior stifled the Rebel senior, holding Hayes to three escapes vs. Theiss' three takedown.  Fobbs, having dispatched his first opponent in 1:50 and Marchand in 3:03, now faced an eighth rather than a first seed in the quarterfinals.  Fobbs pinned Theiss in 4:21.

On the bottom half of the brackets #2 Russell had things well in hand until the semifinals, where he met Simmons for the second time.  The Crusader sophomore gave Russell a hard time on December 7th in a 5-4 match.  This one was no easier for Russell, who needed an escape with four seconds remaining to advance via a 4-3 score.

Fobbs dominated Russell in the finals, netting a 9-0 MD.  After the match Russell lauded Fobbs, saying he had never felt someone's hips weigh so much on his back.

Simmons gave Hayes a tough 3-1 CSF match and then defeated Theiss 7-1 to place third.  The CSF win was the best Hayes could manage, though.  While ahead in the consolation finals 7-0 in the second period against Gabriel Millbern, he was reversed to his back and pinned in 1:41.
