East Ascension junior Jacobi Clement was 6-1 entering this
event with a loss and subsequent win arising from Dutchtown's Graham Pontillas.
Mandeville's Mile Edwards had 12 wins, including one
against Pontillas. Both had
wins over Zachary's Sergio Houston.
Clement had a win over Sam Houston's Peyton Miller.
To his credit, Edwards had victories over Spartan champion Aiden Lindsey,
LACL runner-up Rory Horvath and defending Division III state champion Preston
Gautier. Yet Edwards had five
losses, including one via Gauthier, two from De la Salle's Jewell Scott, and one
from Rummel's Neil Borne and Dane Schumacher of St. Paul.
Strength of schedule may be why Edwards was the top seed and Clement was
second, but losing to four opponents vs. losing to only one, and having avenged
that loss - that is a hard call to make.
Clement took it in stride, though.
His 0:59 finals win against Edwards was his shortest of four appearances
on the mat in this event.
Lindsey took third via a fall in 3:50 over Covington's Sean
Marquette while Houston defeated #7 Loukas Naquin of Terrebonne 12-9 to place
fifth.
