The only mar on East Jefferson's Luca Maneckshaw's record was a loss to
Holy Cross' Nicholas Sauerwin in the semifinals of the Tiger Open on November
12th. He won his other 24 matches, including finals matches at the Warrior
Open Griffin Open, Big Horse Open and District 5-5A Championships. He
dominated those in his path to the finals via a pin in 0:59, 0:30 (with a, so
far at least, season-ending injury to Fontainebleau's Connor Terrebonne) and a
15-5 MD. On the other side of the bracket was Chalmette junior Mohammed
Gaber was 19-9, but do not let those nine losses fool you. They are from a
"Who's Who at 138lbs in 2022-23." Three came from Dutchtown's Cole Gros
and two were from Sebastian Vidacovich of Holy Cross. Reece Knight of
Catholic beat Gaber by three points, Ethan White of Zachary by two. 2022
Division I runner-up Conlan Enk and 2021-22 Division II state champion Ethan
Boudreaux were less kind. Those matches, though, were at 138 lbs., and
Gaber was debuting at 132 in this event. He reached the finals with falls
in 2:41, 0:37 and 3:58. Maneckshaw proved too much, however, as the
Spartan won 8-2.
Third-seeded Cameron Hebert of North Vermillion made the consolation finals
after a 13-8 win over #8 Braden Forman of Acadiana. There he would face #4
Beaux Courville of Plaquemine, who advanced to that match with a fall in 2:43
over Timothy Marquette of Covington. Courville defeated Hebert 6-4 to
place third and Forman defeated Marquette to win the fifth-place medal.
