Perhaps erring on the side of caution in case Perry went 132, the 138 lbs.
weight class could also be described as beastly. It had De la Salle
Division III state champion Shane Barbarin and Division I runner-up Grant
Herbert of Jesuit. Cole Gros of Dutchtown, a 2021 Warrior champion was a
factor, as was St. Amant's Ephram Craddock. None, however, could get past
2021 Warrior champion Caleb Lavine of Sam Houston. Lavine dispatched of a
talented Kolton West of Live Oak 6-2 before a tough 7-5 win over Herbert.
He followed that with a 6-0 win over Craddock and a 10-2 MD over Gros.
Lavine started a great freshman season at this event, including a fourth-place
medal at the state championships, and going the full six minutes in his four
matches can only be a good thing in early November. Barbarin placed third
via a 4-1 win over Craddock.
