East Ascension junior Lucas Maneckshaw's 2022 state hopes for a medal ended in
the quarterfinals via an injury that forced him to withdraw from the tournament.
If one asked any of his opponents at the Warrior, he has yet to get over that.
Maneckshaw recorded three first period falls and a 9-2 semifinals victory to win the
championship over a "loaded" field. It included 2022 Division III state
champion and Outstanding Wrestler Cameron Redditt from Brusly, 2022 Division III
runner-up and 2021 state champion Luke Caballero of St. Louis, St. Michael's
sixth-place winner Antonio Barraza and Jesuit's Chase Haydel, who placed T-7th
in Division I in 2022. Also in the field was Catholic freshman Kristian
Scott, whose first varsity win was a 5-2 win over Redditt. (Scott also
beat Redditt in the 2021 Brusly Snowman, via a fall in 54 seconds, as a
seventh-grader.) Maneckshaw was not to be denied, however.
After a tough 9-2 win over the Blue Jay senior Haydel he pinned Scott in 3:08.
Haydel placed third with a 10-6 win over Barraza, whose fourth-place finish was
the highest for the home team Warriors.

Consolation Rounds
In what must have been a heartbreaking loss, St. Louis senior Luke Caballero
squandered a one-point lead over Brusly's Cameron Redditt in the final seconds
of the third consolations round. Caballero
took a 1-0 lead after 13 seconds had elapsed in the third period. Neither
wrestler scored in the first period, and Caballero was able to ride-out Redditt
in the second. Last season the two split matches, with Caballero
dominating Redditt in the Brusly Invitational finals 10-2, and Redditt returning
the favor in the Division III finals, 9-3. Their third match seemed to be
going Caballero's way after his third period escape, but the Saint gave up a
duck-under and a takedown with four seconds remaining, giving Redditt a 3-2 win.

Chase Haydel (JES) defeated Antonio Barraza (StM) 10-6 to place 3rd |

Cameron Edwards (DUT) pinned Sherry Jugsuijinda (CEN) in 2:21 to place
third in the consolation bracket
This was the freshman Jugssuijinda's (man I miss MS-DOS keyboard
macros!) first event. She lost a wrestle-off for the 126 lbs. slot, but
as 132 lbs. was open, she told her coach "I want to wrestle." She stepped onto the mat
against two unknown opponents, lost twice, and was back at practice on Monday.
She is a wrestler, now, and nobody can say otherwise. |
