Konnor Keel Springfield |
Layden McDonald Holy Cross |
The finalists for this weight class had a combined 2021-22 record of...0-0. Neither St. Thomas More's Collin Crochet nor Springfield's Konnor Keel had any matches recorded on TW last season. Entering this event, Keel still had no matches under his singlet. Crochet had four after going 2-1 at the Tiger Invitational and a dual meet win against Comeaux. The two were even after the first period of the finals, but then Crochet took over, outscoring Keel 6-2 prior to scoring a fall in 4:49. This is just speculation, but the addition of two-time Division II state champion John Paul Travasos, who is around Crochet's size, to the Cougars' coaching staff, may have helped. Keel actually got past a Holy Cross opponent, senior Layden McDonald, who has plenty of 2021-22 experience, including the Spartan Invitational, the Louisiana Classic, the District 9-5A championships and the state championships. Keel kept McDonald scoreless in the first two period while scoring four points of his own, and after McDonald managed a third-period takedown, Keel added three more points before netting a fall.
McDonald defeated St. Amant senior Elijah Bent 9-7 to place third.
