There is another Dutchtown Griffin who was undefeated as of the end of the
Spartan Invitational. One might think it would be Cole Mire, but he is in
a thoroughly ridiculous weight class. It is Shank's 2021-22 understudy,
William Mathis. The junior Griffin is 11-0 as of November 23rd, with
tournaments wins at this event, the Griffin Open and the Lakeshore Open.
While 170 lbs. could be considered a weight class looking for the return of
football players, they should be wary of Mathis. He has wins over Brusly
2022 Division III runner-up Chris Miller, East Ascension's Gabriel Bonin and now
over Covington's Landon Carroll, who placed fifth in Division I in 2022.
Mathis, with Shank at 152 lbs. and senior Wyatt Kersten at 160 lbs., did not
compete in the 2022 state championships. Carroll still has a promising
season ahead of him. After the Spartan he is 6-2, with his other loss
prior to his Spartan Invitational finals match, coming from Teurlings Catholic's
Braedon Simoneaux, who at that time was undefeated.
St. Amant's Bradley Anderson defeated Kohen Johnson of Holy Cross in 0:58 to place third.
