The 160 lbs. finals match might not have been the most anticipated match of the
tournament. The 120 lbs. and 138 lbs. weight classes had that distinction.
But the 160 lbs. one would be the one everybody talked about. The Spartan
was the first event of the season for Holy Cross sophomore Nicholas DiGeralamo,
as it was a year ago. Both times, however, DiGeralamo came away as the
runner-up. In 2021 it was Dutchtown's Foster Shank who rolled through a
throw to put DiGeralamo on his back for a first-period fall. This match
was not as fast, in fact it went the distance, but the result was the same for
the Tiger sophomore. Fontainebleau senior Aiden Lindsey lost the first
period 3-2, but won the second period 4-1, a score which included two nearfall
points via a cross-face cradle. Neither wrestler scored in the third
period, and Lindsey won a 6-4 championship. Additionally, Lindsey was
recognized as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler. Coincidentally, Shank
was voted the Outstanding Wrestler in 2021 after his win over DiGeralamo.
Nobody should view that as the start of a tradition, however. Betting
against DiGeralamo is not recommended. If one feels an urge to do so,
helpful phone numbers may be found on the walls by any video poker machines.
Keep in mind that the Spartan was DiGeralamo's first event of the season and
Lindsey was his third match. Prior to the finals Lindsey was 9-5,
finishing third at the Lakeshore Open and fourth at the Bulldog Brawl.
This is not an excuse for DiGeralamo losing the match. But it explains
DiGeralamo's conduct after the match. Many, including the editor, thought
he was just upset after the loss. He was, of course, but that is not why
he failed to shake Lindsey's hand and walked quickly off the mat in one
direction, and then the opposite way, again failing to shake Lindsey's hand.
He was out of shape, which is his fault, but he was also ill, which is not his
fault. He was looking for a place to "express" that he was ill, and did
not see one on the other side of the mat, and thus reversed himself to go
outside. Were this not the case, it is doubtful one will see him on the
Holy Cross roster at the South Walton Border Wars this weekend. Were this
not the case, one should not see him again this season. The safe bet is
that DiGeralamo will compete this weekend.
Peyton Miller of Sam Houston lost only his second match of the season to
Lindsey (his other loss was to Jesuit's Arthur Schott) to go with 12 wins.
Miller placed third with a 3-2 win over Jacoby Johnson of Baton Rouge.
Miller seems to smile a lot. That may stem from the fact that the
sophomore has already won as many tournaments as he did all of last season.
Or that placing first and third means one won one's last match. It is
ssimply good to see.
