Teurlings Catholic junior Ethan Boudreaux won his second Division II state championship, .  With Brennan Romero and Ashton Sonnier before him, the Rebels set the pace winning three of the first five Division II title matches.

Seeding Synopsis

Ethan Boudreaux of Teurlings Catholic considered DII Division 132 lbs. his weight class.  In fact, the junior defending Division II state champion never wavered from it.  The Rebels are not ones to skirt the very best competition they can find, so that meant matches with Brother Martin senior Mason Elsensohn.  The two met five times over the season.  The first match was a close 3-0 affair.  The second was closer, 3-1.  But Elsensohn’s margins grew to 7-2, a fall in 3:19 and a 9-1 MD.  Two other losses came from 2021 Division III state champion Wiley Boudreaux and the Rebel’s other loss came from then three-time Division II state champion Glenn Price of Shaw.  In tournaments Boudreaux finished second at the Rummel 8 (loss the Elsensohn), third in the Gulf Coast Clash (quarterfinals loss to Elsensohn),  second at the Black Horse (again, Elsensohn), second at the Jacob McMillan (Boudreaux the Shark) and second in the Louisiana Classic (back to Elsensohn).  He did win a couple of tournaments before the state championships.  He placed first at the Ken Cole via a 16-3 MD over Dutchtown freshman Cole Gross and was the Lafayette Metro champion, defeating Basile’s Brevan Fields via a 17-2 technical fall in the second period.  During the season he beat Rummel Division II state champion Carter Burgess and Division III 2 x runner-up and 2020 state champion Andre Johnson of Basile.

Rummel senior Cole Curry placed fifth in 2021 and was seeded second in this event.  He spent most of this season at 126 lbs. until the state championships when he gave way to fellow senior Carter Burgess.  At 126 lbs. he faced some monstrous competition: Coen Begnaud of Teurlings Catholic (D2 2nd), Caleb Lavine of Sam Houston (D1 4th), Wiley Boudreaux of Southside (D1 3rd), Ty Duncan of Brother Martin (D1 2nd ) and Watts Goodson of Catholic (D1 1st).  Sure, he lost those matches, but 215 others lost to those five during the season.  He defeated East Ascension’s Lucas Maneckshaw, St. Amant’s Ephraim Craddock and Airline’s Peyton Plunkett.  Curry placed sixth at the Ken Cole, second at the Raider 8 and the District 9-5A championships, and he won the Battle of New Orleans.

Haughton junior Tyler Villareal was seeded third.  The Pirate placed second at the Riot on the Red, the Lone Survivor and third at the North Louisiana Regionals.  At the LACL he posted a 6-4 win over Dutchtown’s Cole Gros.  Rayne’s Kayden Trahan was seeded fourth.  The senior placed third at the Lafayette Metro, second at the Lone Survivor and won the Rayne Invitational.

Finals

Boudreaux and Curry had not met during the season, but such experience appeared unnecessary for the Defending Division II state champion.  Leading 4-2 after the first 30 seconds, Boudreaux ran off another eight unanswered points before the first two minutes had elapsed.  He added five more points to record a technical fall in 3:21.

(1) Ethan Boudreaux (TC) defeated (2) Cole Curry (RUM) 17-2 TF
