Rebels take precarious lead over Crusaders after Friday at the Louisiana Classic
January 15th, 2022| Written by: Staff writer

Teurlings Catholic is the surprise leader at the 2022 Louisiana Classic after the first day of wrestling at the Lamar-Dixon EXPO Center in Gonzales, Louisiana.  The Rebels scored 155 points, five more than second-place Brother Martin, with 150. A 29-point drop occurs to find the Jesuit Blue Jays in third, with 121 points, followed by Catholic with 109 points and, perhaps more surprising than the Rebels in the lead, the Holy Cross Tigers with 102 points in fifth.  Defending Division I state champion St. Paul is in sixth place, followed by Texas visitor Rockwall Heath, East Ascension, Shaw and Rummel.

The Rebels and the Crusaders each have eight semifinalists.  None will meet in the semifinals, but the Crusaders have the edge on how many are expected to win their matches.  The Crusader semifinalists are higher seeds than their opponents in five of their semifinals.  The Rebels are the higher seeds in only three of theirs.

Two semifinalists were not seeded in the top eight spots.  That comes as no surprise for Acadiana’s Luke Lafleur, competing in his first event of the season at 138 lbs.  Lafleur placed third in Division I in 2021.  Lafleur defeated sixth-seeded Brandt Babineaux of TC and then #3 Andrew Lusby of Live Oak.  North DeSoto’s Daniel Olivier, on the other hand, placed sixth in Division II last season.  However, he is 16-0 (not counting out-of-state losses, which were only at some miniscule Missouri event called the Kansas City Stampede.  He won the Little Rock Central Classic, the David Beeson Memorial and the Parkway Big Cat.  He has defeated Parkway’s Christopher Bacot 11-5 and 13-9.  He teched Parkway’s Peyton Plunkett (the fourth seed at 126 lbs.) and beat John Curtis’s 2021 Division III runner-up Preston Curtis in 3:04 and 23-10 MD.  Yet Olivier was not seeded in the top eight at 132 lbs. (he was actually seeded 12th to Bacot’s 10th).
