Lone Survivor

Parkway won the Lone Survivor tournament last Friday and Saturday, December 29th and 30th, held at Parkway.  The Panthers had three champions, in a row from 132 lbs. to 145 lbs., in Christopher Bacot, David Viers and Jonathan Weissback.  (Viers and Weissbach were also runners-up at the Trey Culotta Invitational a week earlier at Brother Martin.)  Christopher Strong, Brandon Earnest, Kristopher Mesloh and Jake Morton placed second for the Panthers, wo scored 274 points.

Finishing in second, 25.5 points behind Parkway but 72.5 points ahead of the third place Sam Houston Broncos, were the Rayne Wolves [photo right courtesy of Trevor Carrier], with 256.5 points.  Rayne's sole champion was Tre`Von Williams at 285 lbs., but Gaven Guidry, Kaydon Trahan, Kaydon Carrier and Sean Dorsett placed second for the Wolves.  Sam Houston and Sulphur also had three champions apiece.

If there were "marquis" matches held, they were the finals at 106 lbs. and 126 lbs.  Tyson Roach of Sam Houston earned his second win over Airline's Logan Olsen and Southside's Wiley Boudreaux won his second match against Sam Houston's Caleb Lavine.  All four should be seeded fairly high at the Louisiana Classic.

The best matches to watch were undoubtedly the one-point affairs at 120 lbs., 145 lbs. and 160 lbs.  Parkway's Christopher Strong pinned the top-seeded Daylon Dugas of Rayne to make the finals, only to come up short, 9-8, against Sam Houston's Pollex Coleman.  Parkway's Jonathan Weissbach previously defeated Evangel's Thomas Bean via a 17-1 TF and, on Friday, a fall in 3:07.  Hence he may have been surprised, or Bean was, when Bean lead by a point after the first and second rounds, and Weissbach had to score a reversal with 12 seconds remaining to win 9-8.  The 160 lbs. finals match was the fourth contest between Haughton's Charlie Yocum and Parkway's Brandon Earnest.  Before this event, the two had split close matches, Yocum winning 7-5 in November and Earnest winning 10-9 in early December.  Yocum may have thought he had solved his problems, in Earnest, via a 10-0 win on Saturday.  Not so according to Earnest, as the two were tide upon entering the third period.  Yocum reversed Earnest to take a 6-4 lead and, possibly wisely, let Earnest escape with 24 seconds remaining.  Such a decision would force Earnest to take Yocum down in that time.  Earnest had not taken down Yocum over the weekend, and Yocum probably thought he could defend himself on his feet for 24 seconds to avoid giving Earnest a reversal to send the match into overtime.
