NDHS Fourth DADDY DUALS to benefit Desoto Parish Sheriff's Department and other first responders
October 3rd, 2021| Written by: Staff writer

North Desoto High School's

FOURTH ANNUAL

North Desoto High School will host the Fourth Annual DADDY DUALS at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 7th, at the North Desoto High School gymnasium.  The event consists of 10 matches pitting members of last season's top northwest Louisiana wrestling team, the North Desoto High School Griffins, against, for the most part, their fathers.  The event is a fund raiser for the Desoto Parish Sheriff's office as well as other "first responder" agencies in the area.

Tickets may be purchased for $5.00 at the door or from a Griffin wrestler.

Entry is free with a badge

Coached by Dustin Burton, the Griffins placed second at the 2021 and 2020 Division II state championships.  North Desoto placed third in 2019.  That is a remarkable record for a team that is only 10 years old.  Five of the Griffins competing on Thursday evening placed at the 2021 Division II state tournament.  Records indicate that none of the Dads can say the same.

Dustin Burton is the son of coach Donny Burton, who will be making his "Signature" gumbo for the event.  Coach Burton the Elder has been a fixture in the northwest Louisiana wrestling community for over 40 years.  (He sat in the opposing coach's chair in this writer's first state championship match as a freshman in 1978 - a 12-0 shellacking.)  He coached Bossier High school to a Division II runner-up finish in 1978 and started 10 "feeder programs" in NW LA, including the NW LA Warriors Wrestling Club in 1999.  In 2021 he was inducted into the Northwest Louisiana Wrestling Hall of Fame (photo left).

The Burton wrestling dynasty is vast.  Coach Burton the Younger's great-uncle James Johnson was the first state champion for Del City High School in Oklahoma (where future OSU NCAA, Olympic and world champion John Smith matriculated) in 1958 and then wrestled for the University of Oklahoma.  His grandfather, Don Burton, founded programs at Airline and Haughton and helped start the prgram at Parkway.  His uncle Jimmy Burton placed fifth in the 1976 Division II state championships for Airline High School.  Brother Joey Burton placed sixth in the 2001 Division I state tournament, fifth at the 2001 Lee High Invitational (now the Louisiana Classic) and fourth at the Ken Cole Memorial.  Cousin Josh Burton was a state runner-up for Airline in 2000.

At right is Coach Burton the Elder receiving a commemorative plaque from NDWA treasurer Caleb Robison upon the innaugural Don Burton Memorial Duals in 2018, the first youth club duals tournament in Louisiana.

The "Signature" match of the evening will pit Griffin senior and team captain Lance Ferguson against DPS' K-9 Deputy Kelby Pearah.  Ferguson was the Division II runner-up in 2021, placed third in 2020 and fifth as a freshman in 2019.  He placed third at the 2021 Inola, OK Tournament and the 2021 Louisiana Classic.  Pearah is not a wrestling father but is a former amateur Mixed Martial Arts competitor and a staunch Griffin Wrestling supporter.

After the fourth match there will be a halftime show featuring Renee's Dance Team, the NDHS Cheer Team, a 50/50 raffle drawing, an introduction of Griffin wrestlers who went on to or are still competing at the collegiate level, and a T-shirt Toss.
