Weight Class Synopsis
Parkway's Connor Cloinger lost five matches all season.
one was to Division III champion Dwight Johnson of Iowa, whom he had previously
defeated and was not a worry in this tournament. Two were to Division I
opponents, state champion Wes Brady of Zachary and fifth-place winner Jace
DuFresne of Sulphur. His other two losses came from Division II's Trey
Winkler of Benton. Cloinger defeated Winkler three times over the course
of the season, and one would think a 2-3 record vs. the top seed would merit a
much higher seeding than sixth. But Winkler lost to North Desoto's David
Norris twice, and to Teurlings Catholic's David Weber. Zavione Willis of
Carencro defeated Weber and 2018 runner-up Kanyn Barton of Sam Houston, so the
first-six seeding were unquestionable, and Norris was ahead of the five below
Cloinger.
Cloinger won the Riot on the Red, the R.L. Turner in
Texas, the Jacob McMillan Memorial and the Gator Brawl in Florida. He
placed third at the NWLA Regionals, fourth at the Lone Survivor, fifth at the
Ken Cole and sixth at the Trey Culotta. his road to the finals consisted
of a round-one pin in 1:29, a quarterfinals pin in 1:25 and a pin in 0:21 over
Barton in the semifinals.
Norris' only tournament win was at the NWLA Regionals,
but he placed second at the Lone Survivor and fifth at the Louisiana Classic.
Norris received a round-one forfeit, pinned his quarterfinals opponent in 2:55
and pinned the third-seeded Willis in 0:56 in the semifinals.

Finals
(1) Connor Cloinger of Parkway pinned
(2) David Norris of North Desoto in 3:01 |
loinger and Norris locked
up at the start, and after a Norris double-leg shot that failed,
Cloinger took hold of Norris' head and shoulder. Norris fought him
off for 30 seconds trying to gain control of Cloinger's legs beneath
Cloinger's hold on him, but it was not until Cloinger tried to whip
Norris over that Norris got his head away, forcing Cloinger to fall on
the mat and allowing Norris to spin behind him and take a 2-0 lead with
1:20 remaining. While taking Cloinger back to the mat after the
Parkway wrestler had stood-up, Norris was cited for locking his hands
and Cloinger received a penalty point. Norris rode-out the
remaining seven seconds and took a 2-1 lead into the second period.
Norris won the toss and deferred to Cloinger, who chose to start on the
bottom. Cloinger tried a few moved but Norris negated them.
Finally, with about 140 remaining Cloinger escaped and Norris tried to
push him off of the mat and was warned for stalling. Norris
finally brought Cloinger back to the mat with 1:30 remaining. With
1:10 remaining Cloinger caught Norris riding him "high," and just needed
to pull one of Norris' hands to pull Norris off of him and score a
reversal for a 3-2 lead. Norris tried to roll through as he hit
the mat, but Cloinger caught his near shoulder and put a reverse half on
Norris, planting Norris on his back Cloinger earned three nearfall
points, but he did not need than as he was awarded a fall with 27
seconds remaining. |
