Brusly Invitational - Brusly, LA - January 5th, 2019

The Basile Bearcats had four champions and six other top-four placers to score 198 points to win the Brusly Invitational by eight points over St. Louis.  The Saints had three champions and six top-four placers.  The event was a good sign for the Bearcats re winning their first Division III state championship, but the Saints do not appear to be willing to just give away the title they won in 2018.  Basile had 12 wrestlers in the tournament while St. Louis had 13.  Two of the finals matches pitted Basile vs. St. Louis, and the Bearcats won both of them.  Isaac Cortez pinned William Gage in 4:36 and Gabe Duplechin defeated Kyle Guidry 2-2 after an ultimate tie-breaker period.  But come the state tournament, an upset "here or there" may make a tremendous difference when the Brother Melchior trophies are awarded.

The other Bearcat champions were Alex Menier and Gavin Christ, both defending Division III state champions.  St. Louis' champions were Alex Yokubaitus, John-Patrick Broussard and William Jicks.

Others winning championships were Timothy Routon and Bruce Arceneaux of Church Point, Jamar Brown of De la Salle, Calep Balcuns of Brusly, Deionesio Talbot and Wyatt Coffee of Hannan and Darren Harvey of Lakeside.
