Nobody in the state has had a better two-year stint than Basile's Gavin Christ.  The three-time defending Division III state champion is looking to join a select group of four-time state champions - Paul Klein and Steven Shields of Brother Martin, Nick Michael of Holy Cross, Micah Easley and Cade Phelps of Zachary, Brad Macha of Redemptorist, Ernie Payton of Hackberry, Chad Buras of Buras and Tim Leblanc,  Austin Schermer, Trevor Shermer and Austin Franklin of Brusly.  Also in that group are Carmen Cortez of Basile and another Bearcat wrestler, Jimmy Vidrine, who is the only Louisiana wrestler to win five state championships.  Christ's last loss was in the 2017 Louisiana Classic finals as a sophomore.  Since then he has not lost a match and has not avoided anyone.  In the 2017-18 season his toughest opponent was defending Division I state champion Luke Cotton, whom Christ defeated in the finals of the Trey Culotta Invitational and the Louisiana Classic.  This season his toughest opponent has been Brother Martin's Daniel Croy, who is looking for his third Division I state championship.  Croy was undefeated in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.  In the finals of the Trey Culotta Invitational, Christ beat Croy 9-4, only giving up points when he was very much in control.  The two met again in the Louisiana Classic in which Croy fared better in a 7-4 loss to Christ.  One way to gauge Christ's influence in Louisiana is that in the 2017-18 season, East Ascension's Trent Mahoney was awarded the top-seed in the Division I state championship for having only lost to Christ once, whereas Christ defeated the Crusaders' Luke Cotton twice, also in the Trey Culotta Invitational and Louisiana Classic finals.
