Friday Ken Cole Recap
January 11, 2019 | Written by: Editor

The results were interesting after Friday's wrestling was concluded at the Ken Cole Invitational, held in the two gymnasiums and the cafeteria at Comeaux High School.  The top-seven teams are possible mirror images of how things might come to be after next month's state championships in Bossier City

Parkway was in the lead by the slimmest of margins over Teurlings Catholic, and those two programs should be just as tight as they were in 2018 when they shared the Division II championship title.

Behind Teurlings Catholic are Comeaux, St. Amant and East Ascension, three teams capable of being the highest placing Division I public schools at the 2019 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships.

St. Louis, last year's Division III championship winner, finds itself 5.5 points ahead of Basile, who defeated St. Louis by nine points at the Brusly Invitational.

Place Team Points
1 Parkway 84.5
2 Teurlings Catholic 82
3 Comeaux 77
4 St, Amant 76.5
5 East Ascension 72
6 St. Louis 71
7 Basile 65.5

Wrestling is expected to resume Saturday morning at nine in the morning in the boys; and girls' gymnasium, with all matches scheduled to be held in the boys' gym around noon.  The quarterfinal matches will be the first ones contested.

The gutsiest moment on Friday may have been when 6th-grader Ben Hudson, the younger brother of Comeaux stand-out Charles Hudson, set-up to hit official Gene Strogen in the back.

The best line of the tournament was, after disagreeing with an official's call "with extreme prejudice," and causing the official to call "Coach's misconduct," to which the coach replied "Official's misconduct."  That prompted the official to tell the coach to leave the gym, but as the coach had wrestlers in two other gymnasiums, the expulsion really didn't carry much weight.

Below are a few photos of some of Friday's matches:

113 R1 Biullion vs. Johnson 120 C2 Krass-White 126 R1 Toups vs. Upmeyer 138 Toussant vs. Morrow 152 R2 Mire vs. Sheffie

170 R2 Dominguez vs., Williams 182 R1 Timm vs., Boudreaux 220 R1 Lotief vs., Simmons 220 R2 Guidry vs. Duplechin

Parkway and Teurlings Catholic each have eight wrestlers in the quarterfinals.  Two Panthers are #1 seeds while the Rebels have four #1 seeds.  Advantage Rebels.

Basile has six quarterfinalists while St. Louis has five,  The Bearcats have two #1 seeds while the Saints have one.   Advantage Bearcats

Only one quarterfinal match pits Basile vs., St. Louis.  Alexander Yokubaitis of St. Louis is a #1 seed and he faces Ethan Landry of Basile in the first 120 pounds quarterfinal,
