Crusaders visit the Tigers to determine the #1 team ranking on the mats

versus

Wednesday, 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross

If any team has a chance to defeat the Brother Martin Crusaders, that team is Holy Cross.  The Tigers were the last team to defeat Brother Martin in a state team championship venue.  That was in 2017, and the Tigers fell to third-place in 2018 behind the Crusaders and Jesuit.

The Crusaders enter the event with an edge in experience.  Eleven Brother Martin wrestlers are returning from placing at the 2018 state championships.  Only six Tigers can say the same.  But a year of coaching affects some wrestlers differently than others.  It remains to be seen whether that philosophy works for the Tigers against the Crusaders.

The Crusaders won the Cinco Ranch Big 12 in Texas, and the Trygg Memorial (using mostly second-string wrestlers).  The Tigers won the Dale Ketelsen Memorial and dominated the Catholic Duals.

Below is a list of possible match-ups.  They are by no means guaranteed to occur, and neither head coach needs to "reveal his cards" this early in the season.

Weight Class Brother Martin Holy Cross Notes
106 Eric Devenport Evan Frost Both are undefeated so far.
113 Ethan Castex Jacob Frost Castex has one loss, Frost has none.
120 Connor Hoffman Dylan Lauriano Stafford is unbeaten (in Texas), so Lauriano could have his hands full.  However, Stafford has not competed since mid-November, so Sean-Michael Cursain my wrestle in Stafford's stead.
126 Logan Bertot Michael Lundin Both are undefeated.
132 Daniel Croy Caruso Signorelli Should be a great match.
138 Alex Duncan Logan Lacoste Croy is undefeated.  It will take a lot to change that status.
145 Patrick Evans Russell Solomon Ditto above re Croy.
152 Seth Alfonso Brady Butler This could be a close match also.
160 Mason Massicot Mason Macaluso No doubt a brick-layer will win.
170 Colby Franovich Cameron Frost Both have lost to St. Amant's Hunter Hawkins: Franovich via a 10-1 major decision; Frost 6-4 in a Sudden Victory period.  The reader can do the math.
182 Michael Clapp Caden Mumme What should be another great match
195 Cameron Frederick Logan Hefner Frederick is undefeated against Louisiana competition.  Hefner only has one loss (David Bernard of Teurlings Catholic).
220 Kyle West Ryan Doody West has not lost in four matches against Louisiana competition.  Doody has not lost in three such matches.
285 Mack Brown Hayden Brodnax The last of Brother Martin's 2018 state champions moves better than most 285 lbs. wrestlers expect.  Brodnax has two losses, if one does not include one loss to a teammate.  He has 13 wins, but his weight classes have fluctuated, as he has competed at 195 lbs., 220 lbs. and 285 lbs.  Brown may be too much for him if he is not heavy enough.
