Five Louisiana teams to vie for the South Walton Border Wars title
December 4th, 2018| Written by: Editor

Since its inception in the 2013-14 season, the South Walton Border Wars tournament has been one of the toughest early-season tests for anyone who participates in it.  It includes teams from Florida, of course, and also from Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.  Louisiana teams have participated in all five events thus far, and in three of those five years a Louisiana team has taken home the championship.

The 2018 Border Wars has 22 committed teams:

East Ascension, LA Soddy Daisy, TN Ft. Walton Beach Niceville, FL Wakulla, FL
Holy Cross, LA Pigeon Forge, TN Choctawhatchee, FL Pace, FL Wewahitchka, FL
Jesuit, LA Woodward Academy, GA Choctaw, FL Palmetto Ridge, FL
Live Oak, LA Daphne, AL Clay, FL South Walton, FL
St. Paul's, LA Arnold, FL Mosely, FL Suwannee, FL

Teams from Louisiana have won three of the first five South Walton Border Wars and have placed second in three as well.

2013 2015
Brusly - Champions St. Paul's - 3rd Place
Holy Cross - Runner-up Jesuit - 3rd Place

2016 2017
Holy Cross - 2016 Champion Jesuit - 2016 Runner-up
Holy Cross - 2017 Champion St. Paul's 2017 - Runner-up

This year it will be hard for a Louisiana Team to prevail, but it is possible.  Woodward Academy has a very good team including three Georgia 4A state champions in Nick Masters (nationally ranked by FloWrestling at 126 lbs.), Vince Maranella and Malcomb Wiley.  Colby Singletary is a Florida 2A state champion.  There are a slew of state placers from Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.

Louisiana has its share of state champions as well.  Michael Lundin of Holy Cross and Trent Mahoney of East Ascension won Division I state titles in 2018.  Jesuit has Perry Ganci, who is a two-time Division state champion.  And Live Oak has Clayton Hill and may have the best of them  all - Camdyn Ingram.  Ingram won a Division II state championship in 2018 as a sophomore, and he was 61-1, when the season ended, with his only loss via a 10-8 score to a very good wrestler from Virginia.  Later, Ingram placed second in the Cadet Greco-Roman championships in Fargo, ND.  Louisiana Division I 2018 state championship placers are also abundant.  For Holy Cross there is Jacob Frost (2nd), Caruso Signorelli (2nd), Logan LaCoste (5th) and Mason Macaluso (6th).  Jesuit has Sam Dreuil (4th) and Luke Eccles (2nd).  For East Ascension, Devon Clark placed third.  Live Oak of Division II has Bailey Hebert (3rd), Anthony Dodson (4th) and Tyler Braun (6th).

Friday's matches will start at 2:00 p.m. and will consist of "Pool" rounds which are used to define seeds in Saturday's championship rounds.

South Walton High School is located at 645 Greenway Trail, Santa Rosa, Florida.
