Weight Class Synopsis

Basile three-time defending Division III state champion and 2018 Division III Outstanding Wrestler award usurper (was that not emphasized earlier?) Gavin Christ was undefeated upon entering the Spartan, which was not unexpected as he was 54-0 last season, and was 39-2 as a sophomore.  Seeded second was C.E. Byrd junior Demetri Teddie.  A rout was expected, albeit as Christ was involved, matches rarely last long enough to be considered routs.  But a rout was not the case.  Christ won, of course, via a fall in 5:17.  But for the first three minutes of the match, Christ admitted to being flummoxed by Teddie's speed.  Christ is one of the fastest wrestlers in the state, perhaps only matched by Holy Cross' Michael Lundin, but he could not catch Teddie for a takedown until 3:14 had elapsed.  He added two three-point nearfalls before he managed to pin Teddie at 5:17.  Christ is too classy to admit it, but he knows he will win the vast majority of his matches easily.  Teddie, however, got Christ's attention, and that says a lot about the young man from Shreveport.
