Holy Cross' #1 Joseph
Foret won his second Division I state title with a 28-13 Technical Fall
over #2 Jacob Fereday. |
Joseph Foret was undefeated during the regular season, compiling a record of
25-0 and winning the Cashio-Shriever, the South Walton Border Wars, the Las
Vegas Holiday Classic and the Louisiana Classic. Sage Nugent of St. Amant
was the only Louisiana wrestler to come close to beating him, but Foret won both
matches with Nugent by two-point margins. (He did require a Sudden Victory
match and a one-point margin in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.) In the
state championships Foret started with a fall in 1:55, followed by a
quarterfinals 24-9 Technical Fall and a fall in 3:12 in his semifinals match vs.
Brother Martin's John Stemke.
Catholic's Jacob Fereday, a runner-up to Christian Walden of Airline in 2016,
sported a record of 37-3 during the regular season. He lost two matches to
St. Amant's Sage Nugent and one to Jesuit's Paul Treuting (one he would avenge
later). Fereday placed fourth in the Louisiana Classic, third in the
Cy-Ridge Classic in Texas, and won tournament titles at the Warrior Open, the
Brusly 8, the Trey Culotta Invitational and the Greater Baton Rouge
Championships. At the state tournament Fereday, seeded second behind
Foret, had a couple of tough matches after his first contest, which he won in
3:57. The Catholic junior got past sixth-seeded Hayden Parker of Comeaux
6-3 in the quarterfinals, and then avenged his earlier loss to Jesuit's Treuting
in a 6-2 semifinals win.
