Sophomore Daniel Croy of
Brother Martin (#1) pinned senior Jerimiah Johnson of McKinley (#2) in
4:58, which was a far cry from their first match, an 8-7 Sudden Victory
win by Croy at the Spartan Invitational. |
There is a reason Brother Martin sophomore Daniel Croy earned a
Jazz Town Duals page just featuring him. There he was 7-1. This
season, he brought a record of 24-0 into the state tournament. He won the Cinco
Ranch Big 12, the Spartan Invitational, the Louisiana Classic and placed third
at the Blackhorse. One of his toughest matches was in the finals of the
Louisiana in which it appeared he was illegally locking hands against Rayne's
Cooper Simon. That would have been huge as at that point in the third
round Croy was only in front of Simon 4-3. But the move was actually
legal, something the Rayne fans even admitted once it was explained.
To get into the finals the first seed accepted a forfeit, decisioned Ehret's
Gage Sonnier 9-4 in the quarterfinals, and then pinned fifth-seeded Connor
Oviedo of St. Paul's in 3:09.
His finals opponent was second-seeded Jeremiah Johnson. During the season
Johnson was 18-3, having lost to Simon, Austin Gouedy of Central and Croy.
Against Croy in the Spartan Invitational, the Crusader required a Sudden Victory
round to win 8-6. Johnson placed second in the Central Wildcat and the
Spartan Invitational, third at the Louisiana Classic and first at the Zachary
Big Horse and the Greater Baton Rouge Championships.
Johnson, however, had a tougher time reaching the finals than he may have
expected. He pinned his first two opponents in 2:45 and 2:41. In the
semifinals he faced third-seeded Michael Lundin of Holy Cross. In two
previous matches Johnson had pinned Lundin in 1:26 and 1:36. This matched
showed a reinvigorated Lundin, as Johnson barely got past the Tiger sophomore
10-8.

Quarterfinals
|
#1 Daniel Croy (BM)
defeated #8 Gage Sonnier (EHR) 9-4. |
|
#5 Connor Oviedo (StP) defeated #4 Tyree Morris (StA) 5-2. Oviedo
defeated Morris at the Louisiana Classic via a fall at 5:59, the only
time they met during the regular season. Something must have overridden
the head-to-head match-up between those two. Their seeding did not
really matter, though, as the winner of that match would get Croy in the
semifinals. |

#3 Michael Lundin (HC) pinned #6 Hunter Goodson (CAT) in 4:18. |
|
#2 Jerimiah Johnson (MCK) pinned #7 Peyton Bass (AIR) in 2:41.
