Rayne Invitational St. Louis Division III This Weekend

Rayne Invitational

Fontainebleau won their second Rayne Invitational last Saturday by scoring 198 points, which was just enough to defeat Basile, which was seven points behind at 191. Covington finished third, followed by Live Oak and the the hosting Rayne Wolves.

The Bulldogs only had two winners and a runner-up, but five others placed third or fourth.  Adam Lampo and Kyle Boell of Fontainebleau made the 182 lbs. finals, but they did not wrestle the match.  So one is considered the champion and one the runner-up.  Evan Miller was the other Fontainebleau champion, competing at 195 lbs. Evan Miller.

Rayne feasibly could have won this event were not three of their best wrestlers, Morgan Manuel, Cooper Simon and Tyler Carriere, competing in the Louisiana Classic.  Simon placed second while Manuel and Carriere both placed fourth.

Basile definitely could have won had returning Division III state champions Brenan Langley and Gavin Christ not been competing at the Louisiana Classic also.  Christ was a runner-up there, while Langley fell victim to the "No wrestle-backs if the person to whom you lost does not advance to the semifinals."

St. Louis Division III

St. Louis of Lake Charles won the St. Louis Division III tournament handily, scoring 224 points, which was 97 points more than the runner-up school, Ouachita Christian, which tallied 127 points.

The Saints had five champions and five runners-up.  Ouachita Christian had five champions, no runners-up, and a third-place finisher.

Actually, one way to look at these results is how many points each wrestler scored for their team.  St. Louis entered 12 wrestlers and averaged 18.67 points per wrestler.  Ouachita Christian only entered six wrestlers, but each one scored an average of 21.67 points.  Of the remaining teams, none average higher than 11 points per wrestler.

This Weekend

The 41st annual Ken Cole Memorial tournament will be held at Comeaux High School in Lafayette.  Wrestling will be in three gyms to start, and as the tournament progresses the action will move into the main gym.  On Friday, wrestling is due to start at 3 p.m.  Brother Martin and Holy Cross may be sending second teams to this event as their first squads may be competing in the Live Oak duals.  Jesuit, however, is not listed in the Live Oak Duals, so hopefully they will be there in force.
