The 41st Annual Ken Cole Invitational started Friday afternoon in two gyms and a cafeteria at Comeaux High School in Lafayette, Louisiana.

After the first day of competition, Brother Martin opened up a 16.5 lead over Comeaux and 20 points over Teurlings Catholic.  The top 11 teams as of the end of wrestling on Friday evening are as follows:

Place School Points   Place School Points
1 Brother Martin 87   6 Parkway 63.5
2 Comeaux 70.5   7 East Ascension 63
3 Teurlings Catholic 67   8 Fontainebleau 55
4 De la Salle 65   9 St. Louis 52
5 Jesuit 64   10-11 John Curtis & North Vermillion 51

While there were several minor upsets involving 9th seeds beating 8th seeds, two third-seeded wrestlers also find themselves in the consolation rounds.  At 120 lbs. 3rd-seeded Hunter Richey of Brusly was upset by Carencro's Alec Slaydon via a fall in 3:37.  At 160 lbs., third-seeded Jeremiah Brooks of Acadiana was defeated 3-1 by South Plaquemines' Brandon Turner.  Turner's win should not have surprised anyone, as Turner is a defending Division III state champion.

Friday was a day rife with side-stories.

1)    First on everyone's mind was whether Lillian Richoux of Comeaux was the first girl to score a fall in the Ken Cole.  Richoux lost her first match to Cameron Witherwax of St. Louis.  In her first consolation round match, though, after falling behind early, Richoux came back to score a fall in 3:35.  Was her pin the first by a girl?  Alas, no.  In 2014, a spunky Acadiana girl named Raven Guidry also lost her first match, then in the first round of consolations scored a fall in 1:33.

Lillian Richoux scores a fall in her first consolation match of the 2017 Ken Cole Invitational In 2014, following this match against Holy Cross' Chris Zea (who placed fifth), Miss Guidry scored a fall in the first consolation round in 1:33

Another possibility was Doyline's Brittany Bates, but only a 5-1 victory by Miss Bates in 2013 was found in www.LHSWA.org records.

2)    What does one call what Gavin Christ of Basile did to Jay Arcemont of Catholic?

Does it deserve a name?  Is it legal?  Is it moral?
