Friday's competition at the Blue Chip Oklahoma City Women's Open consisted of four five-person pools.  Pool records are used to determine which bracket a wrestler will compete in on Saturday.

Brittany Bates of Wayland Baptist College (and Doyline High School) finished second in Pool B, which qualified her for the eight-person championship bracket on Saturday.  Bates pinned three of her opponents, won via an injury in another, and lost one match by a technical fall.  Her loss was to Alexia Ward of McKendree University (of Lebanon, Illinois).  Bates' first match on Saturday will be against Darla Allen (competing unattached to a team) who went 5-0 in Pool C.

Abby Nette of Emmanuel College posted a 3-2 record (including a bye) and placed third in Pool A.  The third and fourth place finishers qualify for a chance to place ninth.  Nette's two losses were very close matches.  Natalia Hinojo of Oklahoma City University defeated Nette 6-4 and won Pool A with a 5-0 record (including one bye).  Nette's other loss was a 3-3 criteria decision to Solin Piearcy of California's Menlo College.  Nette's first match Saturday will be against Menlo College's Melanie Corderro.

Hence, a match between Bates and Nette will not come in this event.  Oddly enough, Alexia Ward, who beat Bates in Pool B on Friday, lost twice to Nette last weekend, yet Bates will be in the championship bracket which includes Ward.  This may reflect that the season is still young, and little data is available to estimate which wrestlers should be in each pool.  That Bates and Nette are both freshmen may also be a factor, as no records from last season (at the college level) are available on them.

Team-wise McKendree University has a 94 point lead over Oklahoma City University (OCU).  Wayland Baptist College is third, 22 points behind OCU.  Emmanuel is currently in fifth place.
