Allstar Baton Rouge group stumbles early, finishes strong on Sunday

The Allstar Baton Rouge team was picked to finish third in Pool C on Saturday, and hence were expected to be in Sunday's championship bracket. But odds are they would have faced a very strong Saturday pool winning team, aside the Crusader A team that defeated them 50-12 in their pool. To avoid that, no doubt by plan, they decided to finish right behind the Crusaders, which gave them an 80% chance of facing a team that placed second as they did. That happened, but the second place team they met from Springstead, Florida, was placed in that spot by the Camden, Georgia A team, which made it to the finals.

Springstead handled the Allstars fairly easily, winning eight of the 12 contested matches, even though the three forfeits by Springstead in the heaviest weight classes made it look like a closer match, at 43-29. Springstead's reward for that win was a meet against Best Trained of Allen, Texas, and the requisite drop to the 5th-8th place deciding bracket, in which they lost to Eagle Empire and the Gulf Coast PINitentiary team to place in the eighth spot.

The Allstars, however, in the bracket to determine places 9th-16th, prevailed against Rayne, Floyd Central of Indiana and the host New Orleans W.C. to place 9th. When the difference is between 8th and 9th, 3-0 beats 0-2 every time.

John Rollins, Tyler Fontenot and Dane Harter scored falls for the Allstars while Lance Robinson eked out a tough 3-2 decision.
