Rando is sole survivor after first day of USAW/Cliff Keen Nationals

Another group of Louisiana wrestlers are competing in another tougher-than-nails tournament this weekend.   Members of the Bayou Elite wrestling club, consisting of Holy Cross wrestlers and one from Haynes Academy, made the trip to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the USAW/Cliff Keen Cadet and Junior Folkstyle Nationals.  Eighteen other Louisiana wrestlers are competing in the National High School Coaches Association Nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Jake Rando, Holy Cross' two-time defending Division I state champion, is the sole survivor after the first day of competition.  Rando will meet Tyler Shilson, a Minnesota Class AAA state runner-up in Saturday's semifinals.

Joey Foret had a good day, notching two major decisions, 18-7 and 18-8 prior to losing an 8-6 winners-bracket match.  He won his first consolation match 9-6 before being knocked out of the competition in the fourth round of consolations.

Cole Clement lost his first match10-5, but won his next two matches in 0:24 and via an 8-6 Sudden Victory win prior to losing for the last time 8-6.

Michael Lundin scored the only other win for the Bayou Elite Wrestling Club, a first round 8-2 decision.

Other Bayou Elite members gaining very important national experience were Cameron Frost, Jacob Spahn and Michael Benton.
