Senior Ellis Herring of Episcopal and Dunham's defending freshman state
champion Grant Rabel wrestled three times in the regular season. Two of
those matches were 7-6 matches split by the two competitors. One point
again separated the two in the Division III state finals in which Herring won
his third match over the freshman in a 6-5 decision.

Synopsis
Senior Ellis Herring of Episcopal and Dunham's defending freshman state
champion Gran Rabel had three very close matches during the regular season.
In the finals of the Brusly Invitational, Rabel did not realize he won 7-6 until the
official raised his hand after the match was over. Two weeks later Herring
avenged that loss with a 6-2 win over Rabel in the Ken Cole finals. The
two met again in the Greater Baton Rouge Championships finals, a match Herring
also won 7-6. During the season Herring also placed second in the Zachary
Big Horse.
Rabel, a Division III state champion in 2015 as an eighth-grader, placed
second in the Big Horse and fourth in the Louisiana Classic, in which he made
St. Amant's Jordan Averette work hard for a 6-4 win and lasted longer than most
against eventual champion Josh Ramirez of Rummel, who took 5:37 to score a fall
over the Dunham freshman. In fact, Averette, Herring and Ramirez were the
only opponents to beat Rabel all season.
Actually the top five seeds finished as predicted, with the only unscheduled
placer being freshman Darenion Gobert of Church Point, who lost his first match
to #5 Sean Barbarin of De la Salle, but came back with an 11-0 major decision, a
medical forfeit and then a fall over North Vermillion's Tyler Broussard en route
to a sixth-place finish. Julius Johnson of Kaplan placed third over Jesse
Melan of John Curtis and it was De la Salle's Sean Barbarin defeated unseeded
freshman Darenion Gobert of Church Point for fifth place.
