Division I
Season Synopsis
The 160 lbs. weight class was not one in which one or two favorites could be
defined at all. Granted, there were some good wrestlers in the weight
class: Baton Rouge's Jarrett Moss, Brother Martin's Danny Evans, Dutchtown's
Kaleb Faul and Rummel's Josh Ramirez to name a few. For a while John Ehret's Jack Fontenot was another in the
weight class. Yet the matches between these wrestlers were extremely
close. In the Dutchtown Griffin Open, both semifinals ended up in Sudden
Victory round after neither wrestler could manage more than an escape. Evans'
Semifinals actually went as far as a UTB as neither wrestler could take down the
other. On the other mat Jarrett Moss and Fontenot looked to go into
overtime, but Fontenot pulled out a one point win. In the finals match,
won by Evans 5-2, a leg injury allowed Evans to trade some takedowns for an
escape in what looked to be a 1-1 regulation finish. The finals of the
Spartan Open pitted Faul against Ramirez, and that was a 3-1 match because Faul
did score a takedown.
Evans and Ramirez met twice at the Trey Culotta invitational. In the
pool rounds Evans prevailed 6-4 in Sudden Victory. In the finals, it was
Ramirez' turn, winning 2-1 in a TB-1 match.
The addition of a good Division III wrestler, Koby Mancuso, just added to low
scoring championship caliber matches. Catholic's Matthew Mire, wrestling
at 160 lbs. at the Catholic Duals in early December, defeated Mancuso by two
points, 5-3. Against Brother Martin Mancuso lost 4-3 to Evans.
In the Louisiana Classic, which Mancuso won, he defeated Ramirez by one point
(7-6) in the semifinals and Faul, also by one point (3-2), in the finals.
Faul's victory in the semifinals over Evans was only by a 3-2 score.
This just appeared to be a weight class in which nobody would be dominant
until someone took some chances and started scoring.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first two rounds.

The top seeded Ramirez finally started
scoring points against Evans in the consolation finals of the
Louisiana Classic, which he won by a 10-2 margin. Staying
in character for this match, however, neither wrestler could
score in the first period. Evans took a brief lead with an
escape in the first seven seconds of the second period, but five seconds
later he was assessed a penalty point during a clinch.
Thirty seconds later it was Ramirez scoring a takedown to take a
3-1 lead. In the third period Ramirez scored an escape,
took Evans down and rode him until the end, preserving a 6-1 win
and a Division I state championship for the freshman Rummel
Raider. Against Louisiana opponents Ramirez was 28-4 while
he was 37-7 overall. Evens finished the season 27-5 and
36-8. |

Division II
Season Synopsis
The #1 and #2 seeds in Division II had not met during the regular season as
Teurlings Catholic's Brennan Trosclair spent the entire season at 160 lbs. and
Huntington's The'Anthony Taylor wrestled at 170 lbs. until February
10th. Trosclair was an obvious top seed, as he had not lost to a Division
I opponent who was not one of the top five seeds in Division I, except for Jalen
Dixon of Lafayette in the Teurlings Rebel Open. During the course of the
season Anthony defeated Dixon twice, but at 170 lbs. Taylor had only one
match "under his belt" at 160 lbs. (Dixon, though not seeded in the
Division I state championships at 160 lbs., nevertheless finished fifth.)
At 170 lbs. The'Anthony Taylor only had two losses to a Division II opponent,
and both were to Benton's defending state champion Jordan White. His other
two losses were to Division I opponents.
St. Michael's Dylan Verret was seeded third as he had a loss to a Division II
wrestler at 160 lbs. (Kyle Roberts of Live Oak in the Greater Baton Rouge
Championships). Max Chambers of Shaw had a good season but was defeated by
Trosclair and Verret and was seeded fourth.
Preliminary Rounds
A minor upset was recorded when Byron Zeno of Northside defeated #8 Avery
Jones of Bossier 8-7.

(2) The'Anthony Taylor (HUN) defeated (1)
Brennan Trosclair (TC) 11-9 SV |
The top-seeded Trosclair started the
scoring with a takedown after a minute had elapsed in the first
period, but before the round ended Taylor had managed an escape
and a takedown of his own to take a 3-2 advantage into the
second period. In the second period Trosclair rode Taylor
for the entire two minutes, setting up a good opportunity to at
least tie the match with an escape in the third round.
Trosclair did better than that, though, and scored a reversal to
take a 4-3 lead. Taylor reversed Trosclair again and this
time earned two nearfall points for a brief 7-4 lead until
Trosclair reversed Taylor near the end of the second period,
making the score 7-6 in Taylor's favor. On top to start
the third, Taylor again scored two nearfall points before
Trosclair scored another reversal, making the score 9-6.
Trosclair escaped with 15 seconds remaining in the match, and
then shot a double-leg takedown near the edge of the mat and
stayed in bounds as Taylor fell. The match was tied at 9-9
and went into Sudden Victory. In the SV round Taylor
attempted what looked like a lateral drop, and while it did not
put Trosclair on his back, it was enough for a two point
takedown and a state title for Taylor. Taylor finished the
season 21-4 while Trosclair was 31-11 against Louisiana
wrestlers and 32-12 including out-of-state competition. |

Division III
Season Synopsis
As far as the whole season is concerned, Brusly's defending Division III
state champion Koby Mancuso had the best one of all of the 160 lbs. entrants in
all divisions. His only losses were to Catholic's defending Division I state champion Matthew Mire 5-3 (who later dropped to 152 lbs.),
Hoover, Alabama's Jackson Hall and to Danny Evans of Brother Martin, 4-3, at the
Deep South Bayou Duals. He defeated Baton Rouge's Jarrett Moss three
times. He defeated Josh Ramirez and Kaleb Faul en route to the Louisiana
Classic championship. He defeated Comeaux's Kole Miller and East
Ascension's Sidney Mitchell. He also won the Brusly Invitational and the
Greater Baton Rouge Championships.
Mancuso was an easy pick as the #1 seed in Division III. Seeded second
was Brandon Turner of South Plaquemines, whom Mancuso pinned in 4:48 in a dual
meet, yet Turner merited the #2 spot due to a win over Evangel's Zyare Hairston
at the John Curtis tournament. Mancuso previously defeated Hairston by a
16-4 major decision in the finals of the Brusly Invitational.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first round this weight class.

(1) Koby Mancuso (BRU) defeated (3) Zyare
Hairston (EVA) in 4:57 |
Mancuso was never really threatened
during this match in which he controlled Hairston's legs on
takedowns and rode him solidly. In the end Mancuso
appeared to have pulled Hairston back from a sit-out straight to the Evangel wrestler's back, scoring a fall and his
second Division III championship in 4:57. Mancuso finished
the season 29-2 against Louisiana competition and 37-3 against
all comers. Hairston finished 23-9 and 26-12. |
