Division I
Season Synopsis
Early in the season it looked as if 138 lbs. might end up a contest between
Brother Martin senior Blaine Eisensohn and St. Paul's junior Hunter Bourgeois.
Eisensohn was the preseason favorite, and a pool round shellacking of Bourgeois
at the Trey Culotta bolstered that opinion. Bourgeois, however, worked his
way back to the finals of the event and turned the tables on Eisensohn
with a 13-8 decision that did not look as close as the score indicated.
They had another close match at the Holy Innocence Prep Slam VII, won
by Eisensohn 3-0. After that Bourgeois' stock declined as Holy Cross' Joey
Foret and Eisensohn split matches held over four days (Foret won 3-2 in a dual
meet while Eisensohn won the Louisiana Classic over Foret by a score of 5-4).
Meanwhile, at the Louisiana Classic, Bourgeois lost matches to Airline's Antonio
Lococo, St. Amant's Joshua Averette and was disqualified against Catholic's
Mitch Vidrine.
When Holy Cross readjusted its lineup after the Louisiana Classic Foret
dropped out of the picture and was replaced by Jake Rando, who had great success
at 145 lbs. except against Brother Martin's Mason Williams. At 145 lbs.
Rando won the Mandeville Open and the Spartan Invitational while taking second
at the Louisiana Classic and third at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. At 138 lbs. though, if the Ken Cole Invitational
was any indication, Rando was a perfect fit. His closest match in the
event was his first match against former Jesuit teammate Jake Rovira, and that
was a six point win. In winning the Ken Cole Rando defeated solid contenders
in Rovira, Kyle Cascio of Brusly, Sulphur's Brennan Taylor and, in the finals,
Tristan Lee of Teurlings Catholic.
Seeding for the state tournament was decided the following week at the St.
Paul's invitational. Rando defeated Eisensohn in the finals by an 11-3 major decision to secure a #1 seed at the state tournament. Bourgeois placed
third at that event, but due to his Louisiana Classic losses merited a mere
sixth seed.

Bourgeois' upset over Averett put him in the semifinals against Eisensohn, a
4-1 winner over Rovira in the quarterfinals. In a very close match,
Bourgeois secured this season's "Seed-Buster" award with an 8-7 win. Bourgeois would
face Rando in the finals, who advanced via a forfeit by Mitch Vidrine after the
Catholic wrestler suffered an injury in the previous day's quarterfinals.

Finals
(1) Jake Rando (HC) defeated (6) Hunter
Bourgeois (StP) 11-6 |
Bourgeois scored the first takedown
after a little over a minute had elapsed, but 20 seconds later
Rando escaped and 20 seconds after that took a 3-2 lead before the period ended. In the second Rando
again escaped and again took Bourgeois down. Bourgeois
escaped again but Rando was able to grab a single-leg and
Bourgeois' head for another takedown and an 8-3 lead.
Rando rode Bourgeois for the majority of the third period, but
he allowed an escape and a takedown with 30 seconds remaining.
Rando, however, did not sit on his 8-6 lead and almost
immediately escaped, shucked Bourgeois down and spun behind him
for another takedown and an 11-6 state championship.
Against Louisiana wrestlers Rando finished 28-2. Against
all competitors the Tiger was 34-3.
Bourgeois finished the season 25-9 and 33-12. |

Division II
Season Synopsis
Tristan Lee has been one of Teurlings Catholic's best wrestlers for the last
two season, placing second in Division II in 2013 and 2014, and in the 2014-15
season he was undefeated against Division II opponents. His only losses
were to Division I opponents, and to some good ones including, at 145 lbs.,
Clint Brownell of St. Amant, Mason Williams, Jake Rando, Hayden Hill of Vestavia
Hills, Alabama, Juwan Robinson of Allen, Texas, Nijahl Butler of Baton Rouge
and, at 138 lbs., Vidrine, Lococo and Rando again in the Ken Cole Finals.
Parkway's Hunter Huckaby was also a 2014 Division II state runner-up and had
a very good season going until he was injured at the Ken Cole. Huckaby was
19-1 with his only loss coming from Lococo of Airline. He had wins over
Airline's Scott Prouty, North DeSoto's Chase Bates, Live Oak's Brennan Webb and
Fontainebleau's Jackson Loupe. Huckaby won the Airline Invitational,
placed second at the Lone Survivor and won the Klein-Collins Hurricane Classic
in Texas.
Due to his runner-up finish at the Ken Cole Lee was seeded first at 138 lbs.
in Division II while Huckaby was 2nd. Webb of Live Oak was the third seed and,
seeded fourth with 38 wins and a George Trygg Memorial championship, was Pearl
River senior Tim Hillard.
Preliminary Rounds
Joshua Lutz of Belle Chasse upset #8 Dakoda Jones of
Carencro in 2:26 and Shaw's Peyton Matherne upset # 6 Harley Grandstaff, Jr. of
Grace King 9-0.

Division III
Season Synopsis
North Vermillion sophomore Brennen Landry was the top seed at 138 lbs. as
through the course of the season he had only one loss to a Division III
opponent. That was to Basile's Devin Bazinet at the Jacob McMillan in
December. Twice after that, however, in the finals of the Brusly
Invitational and in the Teurlings Catholic Rebel Open, Brennen avenged that
setback. Bazinet, however, was sidelined after January 24th which put
Kaplan junior Tyrone Broussard in the #2 spot. Due to losses to both
Landry and Broussard, De la Salle's Raekwon Thomas was seeded third and Fisher's
Troy Bourgeois was in the fourth spot.
Preliminary Rounds
No upsets were recorded in the first round.

Finals
(1) Brennen Landry (NV) defeated (3) Raekwon
Thomas (DLS) 8-6 SV |
Landry previously defeated Thomas 9-6
in the third consolation round of the Ken Cole. But, as he
showed in his rematch with Broussard, Thomas came to wrestle.
In fact, with 19 seconds left Thomas had a 6-5 lead over Landry
and was riding him just fine. But then Thomas was assessed
a crucial "locking hands" penalty, evening the score at 6-6 and
sending the match into a Sudden Victory period. After 20
seconds elapsed Landry caught Thomas with a double-leg shot near
the edge of the mat, but kept his feet in the circle as Thomas
went down, securing his first state championship. Landry
finished his season 31-7 while Thomas was 31-13 against
Louisiana competition and 34-14 against all opponents. |
