A 9-7 Sudden Victory decision at the Louisiana Classic gave Chase Cochran of
St. Paul's the top seeding position in this weight class, putting Teurlings
Catholic's Kynan Sonnier in the #2 spot. A rematch, however, was not to be
as Cochran succumbed to a tournament ending injury against Dutchtown's Luther
Jones in the second round. That left the door open for the defending
Division II state champion from Benton, Jordan White, to make his way to the
finals. White, who was only seeded 8th despite having avenged his only
loss against 15 wins (including a 1-0 record against 6th-seeded Keegan Gilligan
of Airline), breezed through his next two matches 11-2 and 12-5 to make the
finals.
Sonnier's path to the finals was wrought with peril, but the junior survived.
After scoring falls in his first two matches he required an ultimate tie-breaker
period to get by Gilligan, riding the Airline wrestler for the last 30 seconds
to win a 4-4 match. Next, he faced third-seeded Eric Duhon, Jr., who
controlled Sonnier for much of the match until he made a crucial third round
mistake upon which Sonnier pounced. Eschewing a stalemate from a neutral
position, Duhon tried to get away from Sonnier, which gave the Rebel a chance to
catch both of Duhon's ankles and work his way up to control and a two-point
takedown. Sonnier won 7-6.
The finals was a rematch of last year's Division II finals, in which the
second-seeded White recorded a third period fall over the top-seeded Sonnier.
White appeared in control for a majority of the match but was never able to gain
a significant advantage over Sonnier, who clawed his way back to a point where
he was only down 5-4 and in the neutral position with 49 seconds remaining.
Both wrestlers had to be aggressive - Sonnier to try to score and White to avoid
stalling calls - and it was Sonnier who pulled White's head down to White's knee
to collapse White for a two-point takedown and a 6-5 championship. This
match should again place Sonnier and White in the #1 and #2 positions in the
Division II state championships.
