The 220 lbs. weight class has been in dire need for someone to step to the forefront all season.  That happened when Northside senior Daniel Kincade added a Ken Cole championship to the LA Classic championship he won the previous week.  The only problem is that it was really Division I that needed a frontrunner.  Kincade cannot be expected to do everything, though.  What he has done in January is plenty.

8th-seeded Mason Pembo of John Curtis just prior to squeezing his head out and scoring a takedown vs. Ethan Gurley of the Comeaux JV squad.  Pembo won the match by a fall in 3:32 and placed 4th overall. Comeaux's #3 seed Matthew Tillman looks to the official to call a pin vs. Basile's Riley Nezat.  Tillman got his wish at 5:01.

Semifinals

Kincade's victory at the LA Classic propelled his seeding beyond that of two competitors to whom he had lost.  #3 seed Matthew Tillman of Comeaux defeated Kincade 6-5 on January 12th.  Teurlings Catholic's junior Adam Garza defeated Kincade twice, via a pin in 5:15 on January 4th and in a 2-1 match on January 12th.  His other loss was to Holy Cross' Michael Yeatman, by a pin at 5:54 on January 4th.  But in the LA Classic, though unseeded, he avenged his loss to Yeatman in a "Sudden Victory" period in the quarterfinals.  He then defeated the #2 seed, Josh Tapia of Brother Martin, 3-2.  In the finals he defeated Miles Nash of Catholic 5-2.  Garza lost in the first round and did not qualify for the wrestlebacks while Tillman did not compete in the event.

And Kincade did not even start the wrestling season until January 4th.

Kincade used two pins and an 8-3 victory over John Curtis' #8 seed Mason Pembo to reach the semifinals and another chance at Garza.  Garza also pinned his first two opponents before defeating returning Division III state champion Brennan McKnight of Rayne 8-5.  The rematch was a hard fought affair that went into overtime periods.  In the second one, after Kincade did not allow Garza to score in the first OT, Kincade was able to stand up and spin away from the Rebel wrestler.  His excitement after the match was understandably, hard to contain (above right).

Tillman, a Comeaux senior with a 16-3 record that included a recent 7-3 loss to Garza, won his first round with a fall but struggled to a 7-5 win over Willie Washington of the Northside JV squad (sparring with Kincade daily must have its perks).  Tillman came back strong in his quarterfinal match against Catholic's Nic Cashio with a 12-2 decision.

His opponent was 7th-seeded Dom Carmello of Jesuit who upset #2 seed Ora Wayne Broussard of Sulphur with a fall in 5:48.

Tillman controlled the vast majority of the semifinal match, except for the last five seconds of hi.  Trailing 4-1, Carmello caught Tillman over-riding him and rolled Tillman straight to his back long enough to score two nearfall points as well as the associated two -point reversal.  Carmello advanced to the finals with a 5-4 win.

Tillman lost again in the consolation semifinals and then lost in a rematch with Garza for 5th place 7-1.  Broussard placed third with a 4:02 pin over Pembo that helped earn him the "Most Pins-Least Time" award particular to the Ken Cole Invitational.

Finals

The Jesuit sophomore Carmello (22-13) accomplished what he needed at the Ken Cole by making the finals, which should improve his seeding in Division I for the state tournament.  But Kincade was not about to jeopardize his new status.  Kincade took down Carmello in the first period and then rode him, prompting a warning for stalling on Carmelo.  In the second period Carmello started on the bottom and tried to roll Kincade.  Kincade stopped the roll and slid in a half-nelson which he used to pin Carmello at 3:29.

Sulphur junior Ora Wayne Broussard, the 3rd-place winner at 220 lbs., receives the "Most Pins in Least Time" award from Mr. James Simmons, the Director for Athletics at the Lafayette Parish School System.  Broussard pinned five of his opponents in 0:35, 1:30, 2:20, 3:46 and 4:02.
