After winning his second LA Classic title, Comeaux senior Tyrek Malveaux was aiming for a third Ken Cole title prior to competing for his third Division I state championship.  Before his 1-0 win over Brother Martin's Devin Leblanc at the LA Classic, only two Louisiana wrestlers had come within two points of Malveaux.  Defending Division I state champion Brandon Luckett of Catholic fell to Malveaux 10-8 in the finals of the East Ascension Spartan Open.  In the quarterfinals of the same tournament, Malveaux just got past De la Salle's returning Division III state champion, junior Alex Martin, by a 6-4 score.  Martin was at the Ken Cole to attempt to avenge that loss.

Semifinals

The 29-1 Malveaux (the one loss coming in overtime at a tournament at The Woodlands, Texas) pinned his first two opponents and then scored an 18-2 technical fall over Lafayette's McKinley Fisher in the quarterfinals.  His opponent was Byrd junior Stephen Martin, who came into Lafayette with a 16-3 record and pinned two of his three opponents to reach the semifinals.  Malveaux had little trouble with Martin, scoring a fall in 2:33.

The tournament's other Martin, 2nd-seeded Alex of De la Salle, brought a 31-5 record with him which only included losses to upper echelon Division I and Division II opponents.  Martin had not had a point scored on him in January, and he recorded pins of 1:15, 0:47 and 2:46 to reach the semifinals.  His opponent was Brusly's #3 seed Kobe Mancuso.  The Panther junior had a 29-7 record but one of those losses was a 3:24 fall to Martin at the Brusly Invitational, which Martin won.  Mancuso fared better this time, but Martin was too much again, and won a 5-1 decision.

Kobe Mancuso and Stephen Martin met in the consolation finals with Mancuso prevailing by a score of 5-0.

In the finals Malveaux sped behind Martin in the first 10 seconds and lifted him off of and back onto the mat for the first two points.  Martin countered by turning into Malveaux and then backing away for an escape.  With a little over a minute left Malveaux grabbed and stood up with a single, and then dropped into a double-leg completion for another two points.  At the end of the first period Malveaux had a 4-1 lead.

Malveaux started the second period on the bottom and quickly reversed Martin, and then let him go.  Malveaux next scored what might have been the best takedown of the tournament, spinning 360 degrees after shucking a Russian tie-up, ending up in as deep a double-leg shot as one could ever ask for.  The period ended with Malveaux leading 8-2.

Martin started the third round on the bottom but Malveaux gave him an escape before the whistle blew.  Malveaux then attempted a single-leg shot which he then switched to a far ankle pick for the matches last takedown.  Martin was able to escape again, but the match ended in a 10-4 Malveaux victory.

Malveaux and Martin should easily be named the top seeds in their divisions come the state tournament.
