There aren’t many accomplishments that could push the quest for three straight state championships to a secondary story, but sometimes history forces the present into sharp focus.

Windsor wrestling’s quest for a state title three-peat will become a huge story come the state tournament in late February, but right now the Wizards are chasing Colorado history.

Windsor has won 47 consecutive dual meets, trailing Fort Morgan’s state record of 59 set in the 1970s. This weekend, Windsor’s streak could be challenged as they compete in the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas.

“We didn’t set a goal this year to achieve that; our one goal that we set was to win this year’s state title,” said Windsor coach Monte Trusty, whose last loss was by one point to Roosevelt on Jan. 13, 2011. “That’s our No. 1 goal.”

There will be top competition in Texas and now that the dual record is close, the entire team is aware of its significance.

“It’s sort of like an incentive along with our state championship goal,” senior Joel Salomon said. “If we can get that, too, it’s kind of the cherry on top.”

Trusty has preached to his team the special position in which they find themselves.

“Like I explained to them, they’re in a unique situation. These types of opportunities don’t come around very often,” Trusty said. “I believe fighting to keep this going will in the long run help us to be a better, stronger team for our main goal.”

Trusty has quickly built the program into a powerhouse. In five seasons at Windsor, he has a 82-8 record in duals. That success has gotten the attention of teams in the area.

“We faced them for the first time earlier this year and lost a close match,” Rocky Mountain coach Ken Taylor said. “They’re tough. I’ve known that they’re a program that’s growing by leaps and bounds. They’ve got a good youth program that’s a nice feeder for them.”

It won’t be easy for Windsor to reach the record. The team is guaranteed five duals in Texas. To win the tournament, they would have eight duals. That would put the number at 55, four short of tying the record.

If the streak is still alive when the Wizards return home, things don’t get any easier. On Jan. 17, the Wizards host Discovery Canyon, one of the top teams in the state.

Then on Jan. 24, Rio Rancho, N. M., comes to town, a team Trusty says is the nine-time defending state champ in New Mexico.

“If it (record) happens, it’s not from wrestling within our little circle,” Trusty said. “They’re going to earn it. Those other teams don’t lose too often.”
